The 2024 Ultimate Pre-Date Beauty Checklist
Here are six essential steps for your ultimate pre-date beauty checklist. Start the magic before the date.
Pre-Date Vibe Check
Contrary to popular belief, the magic doesn’t just happen in the midst of the date night, it happens before too! Properly preparing for the occasion will not only impact your level of confidence, but it can also impact the success of a date. That’s why you need to follow these beautifying steps before you spend a romantic night out with that special someone.
Six Essential Steps for Your Ultimate Pre-date Beauty Checklist
Step 1: Exfoliate Your Skin
To keep your skin looking soft and smooth, you must exfoliate. Scrub off those dead skin cells from your body by using a loofa or exfoliating gloves. Regular exfoliation will help improve circulation and allow your skin to appear brighter and more energized. Make sure that you’re hitting every area of your body, but be careful that you aren’t scrubbing too vigorously. Otherwise, your skin may become red or irritated, especially in more sensitive regions, like the chest or face. To ensure you don’t show up to your date with blotchy-looking skin, try exfoliating in the shower the night before your scheduled plans.
Step 2: Shave Your Body
Part of attaining soft and smooth skin involves shaving. It’s not always a necessity, but depending on what you’re wearing, you may feel better if you shave off those prickly, unwanted hairs. Unfortunately, this task can sometimes be tricky, especially for those of you with lighter hair who don’t realize you missed a section until it’s too late. Although shaving can be time-consuming, it’s imperative that you dedicate time to this activity so that you don’t miss any areas on your body or risk your chance of getting razor bumps and/or ingrown hairs. To alleviate the chance of this happening, you should apply shaving cream before shaving to soften the hair follicles and lubricate the skin.
Step 3: Moisturize From Head-to-toe
When you’re finished exfoliating and shaving, grab a lotion, ointment, or cream, and moisturize your body from head to toe. This will give your skin the perfect dewy finish for your date. Along with this, it will also help to replenish the natural barrier of your skin by locking in moisture. And while you may choose to lather yourself in a scented lotion, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a fragrance-free ointment or cream instead as they usually treat skin more effectively.
Step 4: Master Your Skin-Care
Next, it’s time to concentrate on skincare for your face. Unlike the other areas of your body, prepping your face will require some additional steps before it’s ready for make-up. For the most part, your skin-care routine should consist of the following: a cleanser, toner, serum, and moisturizer. However, depending on your unique skin type, the routine you follow and the products you use may vary. If you have acne-prone skin, for example, you may also want to use a high-strength acne cream to treat your blemishes leading up to your date. On the other hand, if you have dry, sensitive skin, you may want to incorporate certain essential oils in your skin-care regimen to help maintain its hydration and soothe any redness.
Step 5: Plan Your Make-Up
Now, your skin is officially ready for some make-up! But before you start caking it on, you should first think about the type of date you’re getting ready for. Are you preparing for a dinner date at a fancy restaurant? Or, are you and your date planning to spend the day hiking outside? Needless to say, different dates usually call for different make-up styles. With a dinner date, you have more freedom to experiment with colorful lipsticks and eyeshadows. By contrast, physical activities like hiking may cause you to sweat, which could result in running makeup. For this reason, it’s critical that you also consider how your beauty products respond to environmental factors and find the best ways to keep it from running.
Pro Tip: Book an On-site Makeup Artist/Hairstylist. For many people, going out on a date (or going out to an event) is a special occasion. We’re not doing it every day of our lives, so looking and feeling our best can be a really fun adventure. If you’re working on all these categories to ensure the night is a success, then why not bring a professional on-site beauty team into your home or hotel to apply the finishing touches and seal the deal? Consider a beauty agency such as WarPaint International which offers on-site hair and makeup services from experienced Artisans who are vetted, technically tested, and background checked for your safety.
You can book on-site hair and makeup from WPI Beauty in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Chicago, and Jacksonville Florida.
Step 6: Fragrance
Finally, spritz yourself with your favorite body mist or perfume. Smelling good is one of the best ways to subtly attract your date and build your confidence. Even though some scents are stronger than others, you must remember that a little goes a long way. Plus, you can always pack your fragrance in your purse and apply it when necessary. To make your fragrance last, be sure to spray it on your “pulse points.” Perfume is activated by body heat, so applying it behind your ear, throat, back of your knees, and the inside of your elbow will keep you smelling great all night long.
As a side note to fragrance, be thoughtful when using these products. Today, human society has built various sensitivities and allergies to some of the toxic chemicals that have long been used in many perfumes and beauty lines. Some people will have an anaphylactic attack by simply being in the same space as a perfume. If you’re going on a new or blind date, our best advice is to go light on your fragrance choices or to avoid them completely during the first encounter. Perhaps… get to know your audience. If you’re not up to speed with the prominence of perfume allergies, watch the video in this article about how chemicals in perfumes and other products can make us sick.
Bonus Tip: Choose Your Handbag or Purse
Selecting the ideal handbag or purse is a personal journey that depends on several key factors. Whether intended for everyday use, work, a special occasion, or travel, this initial decision lays the foundation for your choices. You can opt for classic, bohemian, minimalist, trendy, or vintage designs, each allowing you to align your choice with your fashion aesthetic.
Size is a crucial consideration. The size of the handbag matters significantly. Consider clutches for formal events, crossbody or shoulder bags for daily use, and larger totes or backpacks for work or travel. The right size ensures functionality and practicality.
Choose a smarter leather purse with the right color or pattern, which can significantly influence your overall look. While neutral tones like black, brown, and beige offer versatility, bolder colors or patterns can make a style statement. But you can also combine unique color combinations to express your fashion sense.
Moreover, it's vital to set a budget without compromising the quality. You can buy reasonably priced handbags or purses from reputable brands in physical or online stores. Lastly, don't forget to consider the functional features. Compartments, straps, and materials such as leather or canvas can significantly affect how well the handbag suits your daily needs.

Makeup Artist Jessica Mae Demonstrates Makeup Looks With Pantone Color Of The Year 'Viva Magenta' On Twin Cities Live
“One of the things I love the most about Viva Magenta is the feeling or attitude it creates within you when you wear it. It’s a powerful color that boosts confidence and swag - at least for me… It’s boldness, with a feeling of fun”, said Jessica Mae.
Putting Viva Magenta Into Your Makeup Look
If there is one thing that Minneapolis Makeup Artist & Founder, Jessica Mae, loves its bold colors and fun looks.
“I am personally obsessed with the year’s Pantone Color of the Year for 2023, Viva Magenta! There are so many ways you can wear this color!”
~ Jessica Mae, Professional Makeup Artist
Makeup Artist and Founder of WarPaint International demonstrated fun and easy makeup tips on Channel 5, Twin Cities Live on Monday, January 23rd, 2023. The airing of the news segment is done entirely live on camera so the techniques need to be easy for viewers to do and able to fill the time requirements of the program. So Jessica demonstrated 3 simple ways to incorporate ‘Viva Magenta’, the Pantone Color of the Year for 2023 into your daily makeup look.
“One of the things I love the most about Viva Magenta is the feeling or attitude it creates within you when you wear it. It’s a powerful color that boosts confidence and swag - at least for me… It’s boldness, with a feeling of fun”, said Jessica Mae.

Viva Magenta Makeup Tips
While you can certainly wear all three of these items at once for a monochromatic style, I prefer to wear one at a time. However, there are no rules when it comes to makeup in my opinion, so try one or all of these. You do you!
Eyes
Swipe a bit of viva magenta on your eyes. I like to focus on the outer corners of the eye with this shade while keeping the rest of the eyeshadow light in color in order for the magenta to really pop! The palette I’m using today is Blushing Berries from Dose of Colors. This is a great palette that you can create an array of looks from.
Blushing Berries by Dose of Color. $32 from Camera Ready Cosmetics.
Cheeks
An easy way to switch up your makeup routine without needing to invest in additional tools (if you don’t already have them) is using a cream blush. I love this Halo cream cheek and lip tint from Smashbox, in Pomegranate, to bring some Viva Magenta vibes to your cheeks.
Pop a small amount onto your cheeks using your fingertips. It’s a buildable color so you can have it be as subtle or dramatic as you want. Bonus, this formula doubles as a lip tint.
Smashbox ‘Pomegranite’ Halo Cream Cheek + Lip Tint. $28 from Camera Ready Cosmetics.
“It gives you that “just bitten” appearance”
Lips
Speaking of lips, I love a power lip. This is perhaps the reason I’m so pumped about Viva Magenta being this year’s Pantone Color of the Year 2023. I found a fabulous lipstick that’s a balm lipstick hybrid from VIOLETTE_FR. It gives you that “just bitten” appearance and with their color Sucette you get that soft but powerful effect. To wear during the day, I recommend applying lightly and then applying heavier to amp up your look for a night out.
Bisou Balm Sheer matte Lipstick. $28 on on their website.
Makeup For Weddings
The team at Twin Cities Live asked Jessica if she sees the bold color trend being used in bridal makeup artistry and the answer is yes! However, many spring and summer brides tend to follow the whimsical, soft fairytale natural makeup look. Our fall and winter brides like to step outside their box and try bold looks, cat eyes, and vibrant colors.

WPI Beauty in Chicago Style Weddings Magazine
When it comes to on-site beauty, WarPaint International is at the top of the industry for brides-to-be, editorial fashion photographers, corporate event planners, and even consumers dolling up to head out on the town. We love to get involved with styled shoots and produce high-fashion content that only showcases the skillsets of our team, but also builds rapport in the diverse vendor community in which we live and work. So we wanted to get involved at Chicago Style Weddings for their 2022 magazine shoot.
Hopelessly Devoted: The Styled Shoot in Chicago
Take a peek behind the scenes at this high-fashion bridal editorial, “Hopelessly Devoted.” You can find this on the shelf, in Chicago, Illinois, in the July 2022 edition of Chicago Style Weddings hits the racks in just a week, so we wanted to share a look into how it all came together. With each issue comes the exciting opportunity to host an exclusive, bridal fashion editorial. To do this, we carefully curate a team of vendors, create numerous mood boards, and pull bridal garments and accessories from all across the greater Chicago area. So on a crisp morning in April, the Chicago Style Weddings team gathered at Wildman BT to make this Hopelessly Devoted vision come to life.

On-site Hair & Makeup Artistry
Great editorials begin with a good base. With two beautiful models, Carmen and Alexandria (both represented by Chicago-based agency, 10 MGMT), Chicago Style Weddings was already off to a great start. WarPaint International Beauty Agency‘s team brought Artisan Eugene and Artisan Jasmine to enhance the models’ beauty and to incorporate trending bridal elements into their looks. Carmen donned timeless loose curls while Alexandria’s blonde cropped hair was styled in chic finger waves. Equal parts in vogue and classic!
All About The Dress(es)
The gowns are also the star of the show! The CSW team pulled over 30 looks from nine Chicagoland bridal boutiques. From Vera Wang to Pronovias to Eva Lendel, gowns of varying styles danced on the garment racks. When pulling dresses from bridal boutiques, their team wanted to style pieces that blended traditional with contemporary. All along the way, they jested that these looks would give off the feel of “cool and fresh, but something your grandmother would still approve of.” We think they did a great job!
The venue, Wildman BT, turned an old boiler and tank facility into a stunning modern event space. So inspired by their “old-meets-new” aesthetic, we pulled garments that meshed timeless textiles with new silhouettes and vice versa.
Lights, Camera, Action!
The team spent a full day styling, shooting, and having a great time. With every look the models put on, the team oohed and aahed with excitement and enthusiasm. It was a really successful day and the results are striking!

5 Simple Ways You Can Make Your Beauty Routine More Sustainable
While it might feel small, making small changes to your daily routine can have positive impacts on both your health and the environment. Even changing just one step of your routine can lead to numerous health and environmental benefits.
Sustainability is the Beauty Trend that will Make a Timeless Impact
The beauty industry is an ever-changing, constantly evolving industry. There are constant advancements happening within the community, especially when it comes to releasing the newest products and implementing healthier formulations for the best results. However, there are unfortunately many companies who still produce and promote products with an excessive amount of packaging, harsh chemicals, and toxic ingredients. Not only does this have negative impacts on our health over time, but on the environment and wildlife as well.
While it might feel small, making small changes to your daily routine can have positive impacts on both your health and the environment. Even changing just one step of your routine can lead to numerous health and environmental benefits. Amongst the countless skincare and beauty trends, green and zero-waste beauty is a growing movement thanks to more people recognizing its importance. You can now easily live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle alongside others with the same passion. Start making sustainable choices in your beauty routine today without changing your entire lifestyle with these five simple improvements.
1. Swap for Sustainable Ingredients
Sustainability in your beauty routine doesn’t just involve switching the tools you use and the ways you go about your routine; it’s also about a change in the ingredients you choose as well. You can start becoming an eco-conscious shopper by learning what makes a beauty product clean. Pay attention to avoiding unhealthy ingredients such as synthetic fragrances, formaldehyde, talc, microplastics, and more. Synthetic chemicals, such as parabens and phthalates, can be found in some sunscreens and artificial fragrances and impact the health of aquatic life. Instead of using products that contain ingredients like these, choose natural and organic ingredients that are only ethically sourced.
As you finish up products you’re currently using and got to throw them away, first ask yourself if these products are really beneficial to your body and good for the environment. Now the next time you shop, you can start making better choices towards sustainability.
1. Opt for Less Packaging
In the beauty industry, new products and restocks are constantly flying onto the shelves. The mass production of how much materials and energy consumption this results in is staggering. To be sustainable is to be less wasteful. Think about how often you stock up on your haircare, skincare, and daily makeup products, and how much unnecessary waste these products cause.
Next time you are shopping for your daily products, look for brands that can give you the same type of product but with more sustainable packaging. Going with sustainably packaged products is especially important if you use single-use disposable beauty products, such as daily eye contacts. There are companies today that offer a variety of contact lenses to choose from, the next time you are in need of new ones make an effort to choose a more eco-friendly brand. Switching to a contact brand with minimal packaging will help you continue to rock your look and feel better about using disposable products knowing you’re contributing to a better Earth.
Some brands including Fenty Beauty and Dior also offer refillable product options such as deodorants, makeup palettes, and lipstick which can further limit package consumption. This method helps ensure you only fill up on products when you run out instead of buying the whole product again, which would include all that extra packaging. You may even want to consider going completely package-free. With a brand like Lush, in some cases, they remove the need for all packaging. Plus, their shampoo bars come wrapped in recyclable paper so you can always feel good when you bring home a new goodie.
1. Discover the Benefits of Reusable Products
Do you ever think about how many cotton pads or wipes you throw away to remove a full face of makeup? Or how many face masks you toss after a spa day? Point is; that there are too many single-use disposable products in the beauty market that are non-biodegradable. We should be taking advantage of reusable products to cut back on waste. Not only will this save you money, but it will also have a positive impact on saving the environment.
Reusable cotton pads for a sustainable beauty routine.
Reusable cotton pads or a makeup cloth are both perfect solutions for removing your makeup and exfoliating your face. When they’re all dirty, simply wash them with warm water and soap or even throw them in your washing machine. Rather than using disposable applicators and sponges, you can effortlessly wash daily makeup brushes by hand or with an electric cleaner solely for makeup brushes. Another good investment also includes replacing your disposable razer with a metal one. These feature recyclable metal blades that help avoid contributing to more plastic pollution. Any amount of these modifications to your regular routine can really make a difference in contributing to zero waste for our planet.
1. Get Creative with Repurposing
Some packaging materials are not recyclable. However, don’t get rid of that finished jar of moisturizer just yet. For cases like these, upcycle it! Once cosmetics are empty, clean out the container and put it to good use. Oftentimes, people love to use smaller items like these as storage. It can serve as a purpose for all your miscellaneous toiletries and beauty goods on your vanity including hair ties, bobby pins, as well as small jewelry. Even better, empty makeup or skincare containers make perfect travel-sized alternatives to your products that don’t come in a smaller container. Reusing your product containers will give your home a unique vibe while keeping plastic out of our landfills.
You can also give your used-up beauty products a new meaning. With organizations like Wands for Wildlife, you can donate used mascara wands to wildlife rehabilitators to groom and treat animals. Furthermore, Project Beauty Share is one of many inspiring organizations that will take new and lightly used beauty products for women and families who cannot afford these items.
1. After Reducing and Reusing, Remember to Recycle
Believe it or not, one of the golden rules of sustainability is often overlooked: recycling. While we can’t always avoid using products in packaging, the simple act of recycling will reduce our need to consume energy and limit the waste in landfills. Place a small bin beside your trashcan in your bathroom for recycling shampoo bottles, deodorants, and cardboard packaging from your products. Make sure to remove any pumps or caps and clean them out beforehand, as any leftover product can contaminate other products and attract bugs.
You can continue to reduce your carbon footprint by only choosing products that have packaging made with recycled materials or materials such as glass that is easy to recycle rather than layers of plastic. Becoming more mindful of the products you use and dispose of can really help you realize how much you may have been wasting before.
Alternatively, some beauty companies including Origins, MAC, Kiehl’s, and more offer recycling programs. They properly recycle your empty products and even reward you with a free product or store discount. for your contribution to saving the planet.
Sustainability involves so much more than just the beauty industry itself. From the production of products, to how we use them in our home; it seems complicated to navigate at first. Thankfully, it is so easy to practice being sustainable each and every day with just a few adjustments to what most of us are used to (ex: throwing recyclable products in the trash, using disposable products, and so on).
Look after your body and the planet, because sustainability in beauty does matter. Feel better about using healthier ingredients and knowing you’re making a difference starting from your beauty routine every morning. Make the switch to sustainable beauty and add it to your beauty trends to try this summer.
4 Healthy Hacks for a Happy Holiday Season
The holiday season is a busy time for all of us, making it easy for us to prioritize everything other than our well-being. Contrary to popular belief, the season of giving doesn’t only pertain to the way you give back to others, it also pertains to the way you give back to yourself! How you treat your mind and body throughout these next few weeks is imperative for having a happy holiday season and beyond.
Healthy Hacks For A Healthy Holiday
The holiday season is a busy time for all of us, making it easy for us to prioritize everything other than our well-being. Contrary to popular belief, the season of giving doesn’t only pertain to the way you give back to others, it also pertains to the way you give back to yourself! How you treat your mind and body throughout these next few weeks is imperative for having a happy holiday season and beyond.
So, don’t let meal prepping, shopping, hosting, and other festivities take up all your time. Instead, focus on putting the “me” and merry this holiday season by following these four health hacks!
Practice Mindful Eating
When you think of treating your blemishes or stressed skin, you may think to reach for a trusted acne treatment to help you target these problem areas. But, in addition to these highly effective solutions, you may also benefit from practicing other healthy lifestyle habits, such as mindful eating, for example.
The holidays are notorious for their sweet and savory homemade meals and baked goods. Because of all the deliciousness that we’re exposed to during this time, many of us tend to overindulge, causing us to experience negative impacts on our health and well-being. Aside from obvious issues like weight gain or high blood pressure, acne is another common health condition that can occur as a result of a poor diet.
Fatty foods and sugary drinks can lead to glycation and a release of insulin in the body— both of which can lead to acne. That being said, it’s necessary to be considerate of what you’re consuming and how often you’re consuming it. Remember, it’s not necessarily what you eat, it’s how often you’re eating it.
Delegate Holiday Responsibilities
It can be a lot of pressure to meet the holiday expectations of your kids, friends, and family members, especially when you take on the journey alone. Not to mention, taking on all of the work by yourself also adds more unnecessary stress to your plate, which only takes away from all the joy that’s supposed to come from doing these activities in the first place.
That’s why it’s crucial to delegate holiday responsibilities. Asking for help from your loved ones is not something to be ashamed of or embarrassed about. It’s not your job to make sure that everyone else is happy, even though it may feel that way at times.
The holidays are meant to bring people together, and what better way to do that than by lightening your load and allowing everyone to get involved? Giving everyone a chance to add their own unique touch will make the holidays all the more special and celebratory. So, don’t hesitate to ask for a hand if and when you need to!

Investe In a Humidifier
It’s no secret that seasonal changes; namely, decreasing temperatures and low humidity levels, take a toll on our health. Whether it’s difficulty breathing, dryness of the skin or a higher risk of infections, the lack of moisture in the air can make surviving the holidays all the more difficult. That’s why it’s a good idea to invest in a humidifier this winter.
Humidifiers are both practical and effective in combating a number of winter-related problems. Regardless if it has a warm or cool mist, humidifiers work to add moisture back into the air and retain a healthy humidity level. In turn, this serves to reduce the risk of infections, moisturizes dry skin, eases asthma, and can even prevent snoring, according to Spring Air.
Cool mist humidifiers will add moisture into the air while simultaneously lowering the temperatures for added comfort. Warm mist humidifiers, on the other hand, come with an internal heating component that works to boil water prior to releasing the moisture back into the air as a calming invisible mist. Neither one trumps the other, so choose one based on your ideal humidity level at home and personal preferences.
Savor the Small Stuff
Before you know it, the holiday season will have ended just as quickly as it started. That’s why it’s so important to stay in the present moment and savor the small stuff, even when things do become a little chaotic.
Overwhelming yourself with daily, weekly, and monthly to-do lists isn’t going to help you get things done if your plate is already full. While they may be useful in keeping you on task throughout the season, these types of lists normally only emphasize the end goals, which can take away from the overall process or experience.
This holiday season, try not to put all your attention on getting things done. Rather, focus on what this time of year is all about; being with the people you love most. Stay present and savor the small stuff that comes from all the holiday craziness. In doing so, you’ll be more likely to take pleasure in seasonal festivities and celebrations.
Happy Holidays!
Beauty Rituals for the Holiday Season: What You Need to Know
The holiday season has finally arrived and while this time does bring fun seasonal festivities and yearly celebrations, it also brings many of us stress, which can wreak havoc on our skin and hair. Luckily, holiday stress can easily be prevented or managed with the help of some self-care practices!
The holiday season has finally arrived and while this time does bring fun seasonal festivities and yearly celebrations, it also brings many of us stress, which can wreak havoc on our skin and hair. Luckily, holiday stress can easily be prevented or managed with the help of some self-care practices!
Rather than solely dedicating this season to giving back to others, devote more of your time and energy to giving back to yourself. Wrapping your presents and preparing your holiday food shouldn’t take priority over your “me-time” as this is necessary for restoring your body from the inside out and relieving stress. So, don’t forget to make time for yourself.
To show yourself the self-appreciation you deserve, try following these beauty rituals throughout the holidays and sleigh your skincare this season!
1) Start Using an Acne Cream
When you think of the holidays, one of your first thoughts probably relates to warm baked goods and delicious homemade meals. Because of all the yumminess, it can be challenging to pass down the sweet treats and fatty foods, causing many people to overindulge and stress-eat.
While chocolate chip cookies and buttery mashed potatoes are great comfort foods, the high levels of sugar and salt can be disastrous on your skin. Consuming too much of these ingredients can send your sebaceous glands into overdrive, meaning your body produces more oil. This can commonly lead to poor skin health as it tends to cause clogged pores and acne breakouts. For this reason, it’s a good idea to start using an acne treatment now before the holiday season truly kicks off! Like the majority of the skincare products on the market, acne treatments typically require consistent usage before visible results will begin to appear. That being said, the sooner you start using an acne treatment cream, the better off you’ll be throughout the holiday season.
2) Switch to Thicker Formulated Products
For the majority of us, the transition into the holiday season is also the transition into colder temperatures and lower humidity levels. Because of the changes in environmental conditions, it’s normal for your skin to become more sensitive or dry. As a result, you're more likely to notice redness, flakiness, and other differences in the texture of your complexion.
Walking in a winter wonderland is all fun and games until your skin becomes affected. Don’t weaken your moisture barrier throughout the holiday season by using the same skincare products you would in the summer as this can further heighten the sensitivity of your skin. Instead, switch to thicker formulated skincare products as you head into the holiday season. Swapping out your harsh cleanser for a more gentle wash or switching from a lightweight face lotion to a heavier moisturizer are just a few ways you can incorporate thicker formulated skincare products into your current beauty routine. Making these small adjustments will help to ensure your skin is better equipped to handle the cold weather brought on by the holiday season, so don't be fooled by its simplicity.

3) Wash Your Hair Less Often
Although warming up your body with a nice, long hot shower is a great solution for dealing with those really cold days throughout the winter season, it’s not a good way to keep your hair and scalp healthy during this time. It’s one thing to take a hot shower every now and then, but doing so excessively— especially during the winter months— can be too harsh on your hair and scalp, causing dryness and irritation to occur.
To prevent this from happening, remember to take lukewarm showers. As tempting as it may be to bathe in piping hot temperatures, showering in lukewarm water is much safer for your skin and hair. At a minimum, try to at least change the water to a colder temperature for the last minute or two you're in the shower. That way your skin has a chance to recover and cool down before you dry off. Additionally, try to wash your hair less often by using a shower cap throughout the holiday season. Washing your hair too often can increase your likelihood of a flakey scalp, so you may want to consider adding a dry shampoo to your winter hair care routine.
Treating A Breakout Weeks Before Your Wedding
It's a couple of weeks before the big day, and months of planning are finally coming to fruition. Unfortunately, the planning has understandably taken a toll and has completely stressed you out. You're not alone. 96% of couples find wedding planning stressful. While this is bad enough as it is, stress can cause some adverse effects on your body, including your skin.
Treating a breakout weeks before your wedding
It's a couple of weeks before the big day, and months upon months of planning are finally coming to fruition. Unfortunately, the planning has understandably taken a toll and has completely stressed you out. You're not alone, as ‘The Worst Things About Wedding Planning’ by Insider reveals that 96% of couples find wedding planning stressful, with 40% even going as far as to say that it was "extremely" stressful for them. While this is bad enough as it is, stress can cause some adverse effects on your body, including your skin. Time Magazine's feature on stress and acne explains that while stress isn't the sole reason for a breakout, it's certainly a major factor that can trigger or make existing skin issues much worse.
So what is a bride-to-be to do if you find yourself having a breakout a couple of weeks before your wedding? Read on for some useful tips to treat those zits just in time for your wedding.
“Dairy is a common culprit when it comes to breakouts. ”
Avoid Dairy
Dairy is a common culprit when it comes to breakouts. And while there are many theories as to why this happens – a popular one being about the artificial hormones that dairy cows are treated with – the most substantial reason is the hormones that naturally exist in cow's milk. ‘Here’s How to Get Rid of Hormonal Ace’ by Parsley Health details how dairy can throw off your hormonal balance leading to bad breakouts. Reducing dairy intake before your big day is a small sacrifice that will lead to your breakout clearing up in no time. Avoid food such as milk, cheese, chocolate, and butter as your wedding day approaches.
Hands-off
It may be tempting to pop the zits that have surfaced, but this would only prove to be counterproductive, as it could lead to bacteria getting deeper into your skin. A dermatologist on CNBC emphasizes how this is especially true for the area around your nose and upper lip. Instead of picking at your acne, go consult a dermatologist, so you can be prescribed with antibiotics and topical cream geared towards dealing with your breakout.
Replace your makeup
Another thing you can do to manage your breakout is to buy a new batch of makeup. Makeup, especially products that haven't been used in the last six months, can become a breeding ground for bacteria. Huffington Post points out that using bad makeup can worsen your skin condition and lead to infections, so toss the old stock out and buy a fresh set. Be wary of changing brands during this time, as they could lead to some unexpected results that may worsen your acne situation. Stick to brands that you know and trust, as you shouldn't be taking risks so close to your big day.
Cover it up
If you've followed all the previous tips, then your acne problem should be reduced to a minor nuisance. But it's understandable if you don't want to settle for anything less than perfect on your wedding. A quick fix for this is to treat zits a day before and on the day of your wedding, or just simply conceal the blemish with makeup. One way to ensure success is by hiring a WarPaint International Makeup Artist on the day of your wedding, as our years of professional experience guarantees the perfection and beauty you deserve on your big day.

How to Properly Prep Your Skin Before Applying Makeup
Contrary to popular belief, achieving flawless looking makeup isn’t only about the concealer, eye shadows, and mascaras you use, it’s also about how you prep your skin beforehand. Figuring out the right skincare products for your skin type and applying them in the correct order is crucial for your makeup look.
Properly prepping your skin helps to ensure even application of beauty products and maintain the overall health of your complexion.
So, instead of reaching for your foundation right away, consider following these six easy steps to properly prep your skin before applying any makeup.
Step 1: Start with clean skin
Before you do anything, you’ll first need to remove your makeup and cleanse your skin. For your skin to be free of blemishes and dead skin, it needs to be clean of any grime and oils. However, you must choose a cleanser that isn’t too harsh on your skin. If you don’t it’ll end up stripping it of its natural oils, causing it to become dry and/or inflamed. For this reason, it’s best to opt for a cleanser that comes in the form of a cream, gel, or oil as these tend to be more gentle on the skin. This will reduce the chances of skin irritation but still adequately cleanse it. When you’re finished, gently pat your skin dry with a towel.
“Prepping your pout can make for a smooth canvas before putting on your favorite bold colors. ”
Step 2: Tone it up
Next, you’ll want to apply a balancing toner as a final step to your cleansing process. This will allow you to remove any additional impurities and dead skin cells that your cleanser may have missed. Along with this, toners also serve as a base for the rest of your skincare products. Whether you apply your toner by spritzing it on your face, or by saturating a cotton pad and wiping it onto your skin, is completely up to you. Although either method is okay, most dermatologists will recommend using a cotton pad because it’s more effective in getting rid of any cleanser residue and diluted water chemicals that occurred from step one.
Step 3: Treat with care
After you cleanse and tone your skin, it's best to apply any skincare treatments at this time. When your skin is free of oil, dirt, and other pore-clogging buildup, treatment products like an anti-aging cream or acne spot patches, for instance, have a better chance to penetrate the skin. Keep in mind that the type of products you use will be dependent on both your skin type and needs. For some people, preventing fine lines and wrinkles may be their biggest skincare concern, whereas other people may be more concerned with fighting off their unwanted blemishes. Whatever your focus is, remember to be selective when choosing your treatment as these products are designed to be rich with highly concentrated ingredients so that you can attain optimal results quickly.
Step 4: Boost skin hydration
Regardless of the skin type you have, moisturizing is a must. In addition to enhancing your natural glow, using a moisturizer can promote an even application of foundation or concealer and help your makeup stay on longer. There are a variety of ways you can add moisture to your complexion. Between face serums, oils, and moisturizers, it’s easy to boost skin hydration. While all of these skincare products can pair well with each other, you should still be mindful of your skin type before deciding which of these products you’d like to incorporate in your skin regimen. Those of you with dry skin, for example, may benefit most from using a hyaluronic acid serum first, followed by a moisturizer with a heavy-cream based formula. Depending on how flakey your skin is, you may also want to apply one or two drops of face oil to lock in the moisture. For those of you with oily skin, on the other hand, you’ll want to avoid pairing these types of products together as they may cause excess shine and clogged pores. Instead, stick with using an oil-free moisturizer so you can condition and hydrate your skin without leaving it feeling greasy.
Step 5: Prep your pout
As you wait for your skin to absorb the added moisture, it’s time to move onto your lips. For all you lipstick lovers out there, this is an especially important step for you to follow. Prepping your pout can make for a smooth canvas before putting on your favorite bold colors. To achieve this, try using a lip scrub! Lip scrubs are an efficient way to exfoliate the dead skin cell buildup on the surface of your lips, making for desirable soft lips. All you have to do is apply a little bit of the scrub onto your lips and massage in a circular motion and leave on for two to three minutes. Despite the fact that you can purchase a lip scrub from many makeup brands, you can also try creating your own using a few common household ingredients, such as raw honey and brown sugar. To learn about different DIY lip scrub recipes, check out this link!
Step 6: Prime your base
Now that you’ve cleansed, toned, treated, and hydrated your skin, you’re ready to prime your base. Primer is the last and arguably one of the most essential steps to prepping your skin before applying your makeup. This product serves to support a polished, long-lasting make-up look because it’s designed to smooth fine lines, wrinkles, and large pores. Primers can come in the form of mists, gels, or powders, so make sure you pick one that aligns with your skin type and suits the overall look you’re going for. For a seamless finish, apply a small amount of primer to your fingers and massage onto face. For liquid primers, wait a couple of minutes to ensure your skin is dry before you start putting on other makeup products. Or, if you’re using a powder-based primer, you’ll want to begin by tipping a small amount of powder into the lid of its jar first. Then, grab a makeup brush and tap off any excess powder and apply it to your face in a circular motion.

Top 10 Reasons to Hire Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists on your Wedding Day.
Have you considered the top reasons to hire a professional makeup artist or hair stylist for your wedding day? How about a Beauty Agency? Would your freelance artist pass a criminal background check? Here are our Top 10 reasons to hire a pro and some reasons to book your wedding with WarPaint International.
Top Reasons to Hire Beauty Professionals on your Wedding Day
A Beauty Professional's Point of view.
So, you're doing your own hair and makeup...
Have you considered the reasons to hire a makeup artist or hair stylist for your wedding day? While there are many reasons to hire a makeup artist AND hair stylists for your wedding, they are all rooted in looking your best on your special day. Your wedding will be forever remembered through wedding photographs and the hiring of professional artists will help ensure that you are flawless and beautiful the day of and in the lasting memories of the event.
Furthermore, the benefits of a Beauty Agency vs. freelance artists are numerous. Considering the financial commitment and high expectations, the "beauty" of not worrying about the last minute proverbial bus - sickness, criminal backgrounds, poor character, or other hurdles - is a benefit that only reputable agencies can provide. Read our top 10 reasons why you need a professionally vetted makeup school graduate and hair stylist on your wedding day.
1. Be stress-free on your wedding day
Of all the reasons to hire a professional makeup artist and hair stylist for your wedding day, this may be the single most important benefit. Take it from experienced brides... your wedding day is guaranteed to be busy and will likely include a few unexpected challenges, so don’t let your appearance be one of them. You shouldn’t have to spend time worrying if your eyeliner is straight while ensuring that your vendors deliver on time. Any reputable artist that is a professional will meet with you prior to your wedding day to do a trial run of the makeup look or hairstyle you want. On the day-of, your beauty team rolls in, on location, and knows your skin type, your desired outcome, your theme, and any complications in the trial.
P.S. Your photographer will love you for it

2. You want to look "natural"
Professional makeup artists study the art of their craft. They live it and breathe it like a musician, and the proper selection of colors is part of their DNA. From your foundation to your lips to the perfect eyeliner, makeup artists know how to choose the colors that match your unique character and features. Your wedding day will keep you photographed, possibly more than any day in your life. High definition optics can do some interesting things to your complexion and pores.
Even if you tend to live in the "natural" state and your photographer does to, find a makeup artist that specializes in "natural" looks so that your memories and face-to-face interactions are striking and memorable. The natural look is far more involved than most brides think. In fact, what most people categorize as difficult is the avant-garde, high-fashion looks you see all over the internet. If this were the case, more Instagram makeup artists would be showcasing breathtaking, natural looking brides than stamping out glorified brows and winged eyeliner.
3. Professional grade products that last
Like it or not, there is a big difference behind mainstream, less expensive makeup and hair products vs. professional grade products that have been engineered for specific applications. Since makeup artists apply cosmetics for a living and hair stylists test the quality of hair products every single day, most have a kit stocked with high quality (and possibly very expensive) products that are designed for wearability and flexibility that you may not own or be able to afford. Not to mention, most artists endure years of professional training to keep up with the trends, techniques, and industry concerns. You simply can't put a price on their experience or the luxury and intimacy of having them apply it and perfect it. It is after all, what they live for - your beauty.
4. Just enjoy the day
Don't fool yourself. You likely don't have the experience mentioned in point number 3, and even if you do why in the world would you want to exercise it on your own wedding day? Experienced makeup artists practice the art of makeup every single day. Experienced hair stylists nearly double that rate. Professional makeup artists and hair stylists have painted hundreds, if not thousands, of faces and designed hair in dozens of eras, themes, and personal taste categories. If you’re not a makeup artist or hair stylist and you haven’t studied the proper methods of executing flawless looks that withstand heat, wind, tears and very long days, then pass on the notion that you'll save a few dollars. The key to being a perfect bride is to be yourself; that usually still requires professionals to extract that state and keep it there for your wedding day.
On a more important note, most brides envision their day beginning in an artist's chair with champagne in hand and the loving banter of their bridal party - not a stress-filled morning of racing the clock and no human interaction.
5. Application techniques
It's not that you don't already wake up looking breathtaking... We actually wouldn't change a thing about you. Industry professionals study tricks to emphasize a person’s best facial features while disguising other, less flattering ones just by applying makeup. Hair stylists have an in-depth knowledge of hair types and tendencies, scalp problems, and product benefits. If you want to really highlight your eyes for your big day, your makeup artist can use special makeup techniques to make that happen without caking on the product.
Want to pull off a bold lip color, but are afraid of transferring it onto your groom when its time to “kiss the bride”? A professional makeup artist can help prevent that, too. Scared of your hair flying away or falling due to heat? Yeah.. they've got that covered.
6. Ensuring perfection
This is one of the most important pieces since the bulk of your day will be spent saying "CHEESE". Experienced makeup artists and hair stylists will sculpt your look using contouring techniques to add the illusion of depth in 2-dimensional photographs and in real life. You instantly turn into a 2-dimensional image instead of a 3-dimensional being when your photo is taken. If you choose to not use a makeup artist or hair stylist, you're likely to be a flat image in your captured memories. If you use a makeup artist that is not experienced, or your makeup and hair are applied and styled improperly, you'll also appear flat and in some bad cases that we've seen - orange! Lastly, you don't want to appear shiny, gray, over, or underdone. Perfection is the key. You are perfect, right?
7. Product, product, product
Like we mentioned above, beauty professionals use high-quality products that are blended with rigorous expertise. When you a hire a makeup artist or hair stylists for your wedding, you won’t have to worry about your makeup wearing off during your wedding festivities or your hair falling from its form. There are special primers, setting sprays and powders that your artists will know exactly how to apply to ensure complete bliss. Your groom may also be appreciative at the end of the day :-)
8. A cohesive look
It is amazing how many women will visually match their friends for Halloween, themed parties, even "pajama parties" but when it comes to their wedding day - the one day everyone should look the same - they turn the other cheek. Think about the last wedding you attended (or even stood for) that had no beauty or dress direction, no orchestration, and no attention to detail. Though that may be the personality of the wedded couple, it certainly spells frustration for their guests and mixed feelings about their captured memories. If cost is a factor, skip the bachelorette party and treat your ladies to luxurious beauty. Nothing is more memorable than sitting back together in a bridal suite, sipping champagne, laughing and letting the professionals unfold your beauty desires. Stress-free is the key and your entrance and impact to your guests will be memorable.
9. Trial pains...
We said it above, but its a pain point for many. We've met brides that have paid in full for 3 or more trials and come to realize they were dealing with an amateur, or their sister's friend or aunt (who can do it for them) and walked away only spending more money on the right fit.
Demand a trial. No makeup artist or hair stylist can walk into your wedding day and smash it out of the park. This relationship is an intimate one and takes discovery questions and a few dry runs in some cases. Always, always have a makeup and hair trial. You'd hate to be orange from the chin up on your wedding day, or worse yet... your artist leaves for Vegas instead.
10. Wedding day beauty schedules
Hire a Beauty Agency. Yes there are talented, dedicated freelance individuals all of whom deliver endlessly, but they do get sick, have car accidents, run late, endure family deaths, etc, etc. When hiring a beauty agency, your selection of top professionals is much broader, but the security of not having a mishap with an artist on your wedding day is alleviated. Even if your artist gets hit by the proverbial bus, their trial notes and opinions are available to the agency and an artist that matches their skill-sets and schedule will simply step in to ensure a flawless wedding day for you as if nothing ever happened. At WarPaint International, we screen our artists, do technical interviews to test their skill level and work with a wide array of schedules.
Criminal background checks. We are also a national partner to Trusted Employees, so we criminally background check our Artisans across state and federal databases for background information. We have passed on applicants that work for our competitors or on their own. You wouldn't want a convicted felon in your home, hotel room or personal space scoping out their options. Be smart when hiring on-site professionals.

~ Added advice and experience
You may also find benefit in pre-wedding day skin care tips to ensure smooth delivery and a "day of" itinerary for your wedding party to follow and depend on. No one should have to ask "when is Jenny's hair getting done" or "when does this person arrive". We've got that covered. Project management comes at no extra cost and ensures that you look beautiful and we provide superior expertise and service on the most memorable day of your life.
SO... Will you be hiring a professional to do your makeup and/or hair on your wedding day? You won't regret it and though we recommend shopping around to find the perfect match for you and your bridal party, if you're looking for excellence in hair and makeup artistry with the added benefit of a wedding planner for your beauty needs, seek a beauty agency. Top Tips to Help You Get Your Beauty Sleep
Beauty sleep is perhaps the single most important activity in your life. When you're well rested, you're mind, and hence your body, can function at very high levels. But getting there is severe challenge for society.
How Can I Fall Asleep Faster?
Many people suffer from an inability to fall asleep right away when they decide to shut down for the night. There are numerous factors that effect our sleep, including where we live, our diet, our habits, technology, our jobs and more.
Beauty sleep is perhaps the single most important activity in your life. When you're well rested your mind, and hence your body, can function at very high levels. But getting there is a severe challenge for society. A good night's rest can burn productive calories, clear up baggy eyes, heal muscle pains, lower stress and make us feel like a morning superman. But how can you achieve it?
Top tips to get your beauty sleep
Make Your Room A Sanctuary
Lighting. This is the first step. Comforting and restful lighting can be achieved through low-wattage lamps that you can place bedside. Lampshades should have soft, natural tones so they feel warm and relaxing. Windows also exude light at night unless you live in a sheltered area. Some people prefer blackout shades to sleep well, while other people may enjoy the gentle moonlight entering through a crack. This is entirely a personal preference.
Beauty Sleep. The single most important activity of the day.
The truth is, only about half the world gets good rest and it's because they live in a lifestyle that doesn't offer all the distractions that countries like the United States do. We are a sleep-deprived society, which increases our risk to heart attack, stroke, disease and bad attitudes. Making your room a sanctuary is extremely important in today's age. For more advice on how to manage this, read How To Make Your Room A Sanctuary by The Front Roe.
Bed Time. Stick to a regular schedule
"There is nothing worse than finally crawling into bed, feeling so tired that you swear you could sleep for a decade, only to find yourself physically unable to fall asleep. All day long, you looked forward to the moment you could head home and go to sleep, and now that you’re finally in bed with the lights off, you somehow can’t?"
By designing and keeping a bedtime and wake-up schedule, your body (and mind) will be better prepared to fall asleep, stay asleep and be refreshed the next day. Its very important to avoid varying your bedtime hours. Some of the top reason you can't sleep are:
- You don't stick to a regular routine.
- You exercise too late, or not at all.
- You drank a glass of wine or other alcohol to "relax".
- You nap too often.
- You go to bed angry.
- You use your bed for other things than sleep...
- The temperature is too hot or cold.
- You showered right before bedtime.
- You worked until right before bedtime (BIG NO NO).
- Your bed sucks and you need a new one.
If you want to know more, read "10 Reasons Why You Can't Fall Asleep by Byrdie"
Learn and Use Breathing Techniques
Do you practice Yoga or some other physical discipline? Breathing is an important part of our body's health. Your sleep habits are no different. While it may take some getting used to, there's a three-step breathing technique that has been shown to be effective. It will take some practice and patience but you'll appreciate the results. This is also a great stress reliever when needed.
The 4-7-8 Breathing Exercise by the Zoe Report
- Breathe in for four seconds.
- Hold breath for seven seconds.
- Slowly breathe out for eight seconds.
NO Technology
"You've heard it a million times, but for those of us who mindlessly surf Instagram or facebook while our heads are on the pillow, here's a million AND one: No screen time an hour before bed. Yes, that does mean your phone. Screens inhibit the production of melatonin, which naturally induces sleep. Your friends' reruns and the political banter on social media can wait until the next day if it doesn't interfere with the important stuff". - Byrdie
And for God's sake, remove the television from your bedroom that gets shut off at 3am when its snaps you out of a deprived sleep cycle.
Technology can destroy our sleep patterns. Keep your phone and digital devices away from your bed or in another room.
Make A Hot Drink
I'll know you'll be disappointed but we're not talking about hot toddies here. Many people struggle to fall asleep on a nightly basis. You'll be happy to know that some foods and drink can actually aid in this problem. Our bodies naturally respond to hot drinks late at night. Many people agree it's the warmth of the cup in your hands and liquid in your body that lull you to sleep, but there is some science behind it too.
Chamomile tea has anti-anxiety effects and some research has shown that it will raise your glycine levels. Glycine is a natural sedative.
If you're hungry, have some whole wheat bread or cereal. Whole wheat is known to begin the process of making melatonin, which helps you fall asleep. You want to avoid cereals with sugar of course. Turkey is also a great bedtime snack due it's very high levels of tryptophan. Insomniacs also often suffer due to low levels of magnesium. Eating fish before bed can provide those missing vitamins and help you conk out.
Is my sleep affected by where I live?
YES. As much as you may love the big city lights, you should move for many reasons. Mass populations are a by-product of poorly designed societies when it comes to health and happiness. They fuel poor human habits.
According to Dr. Lisa Wolfe of Northwestern Medicine and the Academy of Sleep Medicine, big cities like Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and others are the primary cause of something that much of our society suffers from - environmental sleep disorder. Planes, trains, subways, sirens, people on the street, gunshots, motorcycles, and even low-level constant noise that you think you've tuned out over time are serious factors when it comes to brain function, depression and advanced aging.
Big city living is also associated with much longer commute times to work which lead to longer days, anxiety and frustration. In cities like Chicago and New York, 200 - 300 hours per year can be spent on your commute. These cities, due to their responsive design, make it nearly impossible to come home during the day as well. So a regular sleep schedule, excercise and healthy eating are also common challenges. These problems can cause daytime sleepiness, mood swings and irritability. Over time it may result in severe sleep deprivation. Whether city dwellers want to admit it or not, this increases the risk of problems such as depression, poor job performance and overall aggressive personality traits. Some research also shows it's the driving factor behind divorce and relationship issues. We've all heard the saying that city people are single people...
Urban areas also have some of the poorest air and water quality in the nation. Most city dwellers run very high risks to develop asthma, allergies, dry eye and even cancer. Their young children are almost certain to grow up developing these health problems. Creating an environment to successfully dominate life is hard enough, let alone mixing a cocktail of sleep depriving elements into your life. If you must live in a city, take careful measures to eat properly, stick to a regular sleep schedule, avoid tobacco and alcohol and exercise regularly, to offset the stress of living in populated areas.
The Nation's Fattest Cities
Junk food and poor health choices affect your sleep as much as every other topic we've covered here. Some foods are great for inducing sleep and promoting health, but some are just bad. No matter where you live in the United States, you have endless options to eat poorly - and eat poorly we do.
The 3 fattest American cities
"Could where you live determine if you’re overweight, eating right or even getting enough rest? Check out the 3 fattest cities in the United States and how well their residents sleep, according to WalletHub.
- Memphis, TN – The homeland of Elvis, fried peanut butter sandwiches and BBQ, takes the throne for the fattest city. More than 30% of Memphis adults are considered obese and they have the highest number of “food deserts” (stores that don’t offer healthy or fresh food options).
*** Memphis also ranks #2 for the sleepiest city. - Shreveport, LA – The 3 rd largest city in Louisiana has loads more problems than being number 2 on this list. Shreveport also ranks in the 99th percentile of obesity, number 5 for diabetes and number 4 for high blood pressure.
***Shreveport also ranks #20 for the sleepiest city. - Houston, TX – As the famous saying goes, everything’s bigger in Texas. With more than 100 days a year with temperatures over 100 F, residents seem to be opting to stay inside with the AC and binge on snacks and Netflix. Not surprisingly, Houston has 1,034 fast food restaurants, the highest in the nation.
*** Houston also ranks #25 for the sleepiest city.
The 5 fittest American cities – and maybe the most well-rested too!
"On the other side of the spectrum, you’ll find the fittest American cities. All 5 of these cities offer healthy food options, a variety of public transportation options and have easy access to parks and outdoor activities."
- Washington D.C. – also ranks #5 for best-rested city
- Minneapolis, MN – also ranks #6 for best-rested city
- Denver, CO – also ranks # 10 for best-rested city
- Portland, OR – also ranks #7 for best-rested city
- San Francisco, CA – also ranks #3 for best-rested city

The moral of the story is that sleep is directly related to mental health, physical health, professional success and physical appearance. You can take steps in every facet of your life to control the quality of sleep that you are getting each night and during what hours you get it. From there, many other areas of your life will become easier to control. Oh... and you'll look AMAZING.
Sleep well my beauties.
Ahhh... A great night's rest.

Interview with Cristina Scabbia
WarPaint International Beauty Agency's Founder & Creative Director, Jessica Mae, sits down for a heart-to-heart about inner and outer beauty, with Rock Goddess, Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil.
“ When you believe in who you are and who you represent, and look at yourself in the mirror... and you’re proud of yourself - you can only irradiate magnetic energy around you.
”
The beauty industry is nearing the $500 billion mark and proving to be a creative outlet for professionals, hobbyists, women and men. With the number of cosmetic companies and beauty brands that have niched their way into the drawers and cases of beauty fanatics, its no wonder that actors, musicians and creatives of all types rely heavily on their go-to products.
But what exactly does "Beauty" mean? The latest Makeup trends on Instagram may have you thinking that tiger stripes and heavy contouring are how normal women are supposed to look. Jessica Mae's chat with Cristina Scabbia reveals a little bit of insight to her go-to products and perspective on beauty, but also.. what beauty really means to Cristina Scabbia.
Interview - The Deep Stuff
Jessica Mae:
You’ve spoken quite a bit over the years about not depriving yourself from the sexy element of being a beautiful woman inside an industry and genre that is largely dominated by men. Can you describe your thoughts on how beauty is perceived in the metal / rock industry and how your personal style works to combat people’s perceptions of what beauty really is?
Cristina:
Back when I started, there were not so many metal bands with a female in the line up. So I guess I developed during that year, a sort of “I don’t care what you think” attitude, as I don’t really see myself as the different element in the band. I look at myself as a singer and performer.
That said, I like my femininity as an individual and I am proud to be a woman. So even if I am also “one of the guys” I still love to play with my hair and make up and wear a tight dress with killer heels.
Now things are even more mixed up and some guys are wearing more makeup and hairspray than women usually do so the game has changed :) Whenever a look works very well and can be loved by many, there is also that other part of the crowd that will keep and extra eye on you and judge whatever you wear or how you look “just ‘cause”. It's part of the game and I love that , it keeps it exciting :)
This is also why I’ve never tried to fight against whoever had pre-conceptions about females in a rock metal world…because it would be useless. And in the end, everyone chooses their own idea of what beauty is, and it is impossible to make everybody happy.
Jessica Mae:
How does femininity play into your role in Lacuna coil? What elements do you work hard at to ensure that you remain “Cristina" at your core?
Cristina:
Honestly I would not know, as I don’t think about it at all! I think there is a special sparkle from inside that tells you what to do in every situation, may it be in a live show, in a photoshoot or in a regular day out. The most important thing for me (and the most natural) is to be myself, whatever happens and whatever the situation is. That includes taking public photos with no makeup on… or being super dressed with makeup on. This is even if I am alone at home, ahaha!
Jessica Mae:
Can you talk a little bit about some of the criticisms you’ve faced from a beauty perspective inside the metal music scene?
Cristina:
Well, women in the business are in a position of being more easily accused of abusing their “sexuality” in photoshoots and live shoots: some people might think they try to sell themselves out. All the while, no one says anything if a guy sweats with no shirt on… :-)
I don’t tend to show too much, but only because i like to feel comfy and I'm more of a tomboy. But I think that all the other women should be free to do whatever they want on stage and wear whatever they want (or go naked if they like) as long as THEY are the ones who chose the way they dress.
Jessica Mae:
You are a big advocate of inner beauty. In a world that is mostly material and driven by sex-appeal marketing, can you talk about what’s below the surface for Cristina Scabbia? - What does inner beauty mean to you?
Cristina:
In one word I would probably say... CONFIDENCE.
I know that's a word that’s maybe been a little trite or abused. but it’s so perfect in the end. When you believe in who you are and who you represent and look at yourself in the mirror and you’re proud of yourself, you can only irradiate magnetic energy around you.
Jessica Mae:
What defines the beauty of a woman?
Cristina:
Some women have that special “glow” that everyone else is amazed by. It might be the light in the eyes, some gestures, a special way of walking… Beauty in general is such a complex thing to define. A person can have nearly perfect facial features and the perfect body (in terms of a generic aesthetic idea) but then they might not be attractive anyway. Weird, uh?
Jessica Mae:
If you were to sit with a group of young women that struggled with self-confidence and inner beauty, what tips or piece of advice would you give them? What should they walk away with? What would they learn from Cristina Scabbia?
Cristina:
I would say this. You think you are not beautiful because you are hypnotized by media bombarding you with the ideals of the “perfect woman”. But if you pay more attention to how many women are completely far from that ideal, do you still consider yourself very beautiful and attractive?
Looks are very standardized these days but true beauty really comes from within. We are ALL different and unique, there is none in the world just like us. We are not even a limited edition so-to-speak - we are all one-of-a-kind… yet we don’t always appreciate that.
Jessica Mae:
Speaking of self-confidence, inner beauty is often driven by one’s ability to see their own glow and special light in the world. What words of wisdom do you have about self-confidence, when we’re often surrounded by people trying to take that away from us.
Cristina:
I would be a hypocrite if I would simply say to someone else: “believe in yourself, you can do it!”.
Obviously I strongly believe that the more I believe in myself, the more I am driven and the more I feel comfortable with my reflection in the mirror. But I also have some days when I feel that I look like shit no matter what makeup I have on, whatever dress I am wearing. Its then that I realize that 99% of the time its not even about my look, it is not about how people really see me… but is about ME, judging myself on a deeper level because I am usually bothered about something else.
Did you notice that when you feel very happy you pretty much feel you look fantastic even with no makeup and a cheap shirt on?
Jessica Mae:
Can you describe your journey briefly, growing up as a Creative, an Entrepreneur and a female business owner. Is there anything you wish you could have done differently? How have your biggest challenges related to being female?
Cristina:
Woah... long story short (we are talking about almost 20 years in Lacuna coil), I started to sing in Lacuna coil in 1996, when there were definitely not so many bands with a female in the line up. Weird thing is, I have never felt like the different element and never felt I had to work more because I was a female. I looked at myself as another member in the band.
Of course I had to go through stages like “hey, I might be slightly pretty but I can actually sing as well!” to convince a still very conservative slice of metal fans that there was space for women in metal. I am very happy that things changed though, and there are now more women in bands of all genres. I am also proud of the fact that I am still here and others are looking at me as an example to follow. I am honored.
As per my career, I took care of my singing (writing lyrics and creating vocal lines) and also my looks from day one. I adopted some in the past that were not exactly great, especially in the first years (I still remember a blue short velvet dress with very puffy eyes, tons of make up and fake long nails) but I also came out of it with great ones that fans are still remembering. In the beginning, I experimented a lot and it was my attempt on searching for the perfect look and I quickly realized, changing and playing with my image, that the best solution was to wear a style of clothes that was… me.
Jessica Mae:
You were quoted once saying, "No matter what, be strong, because the message that people will get is from your strength. There is not just one kind of beauty in this world." Can you describe the time or moment when you turned the page and understood what that strength and inner beauty looked like for you?
Cristina:
It is weird because some people think I am, but I never really looked at me as a beautiful woman. I still consider myself as a very normal (at least aesthetically) woman that learned to improve some things on her look.
I think strength is when you don’t feel the most perfect person in the world but it is when you can accept your flaws as well, and make them your best quality.
The Fun Stuff: On The Surface
Jessica Mae:
We know that understanding what is inside, is the driving force behind one’s beauty, but we still like to “look” beautiful and feel sexy too. What are the top 3 things that you do to create your radiant look or sex appeal?
Cristina:
My “raccoon eyes” signature look. My eyes are kind of small so I started to enhance them years ago with lots of black matte eyeshadow that was reminiscent of “smokey eye” look, but was also covering all the lower part of the eye. So I feel good when I have this look on!
Whenever I want to feel really sexy I put on a mini-dress and very high heels. I don’t wear them often (my friends are always telling me I have to show them more, ahaha!) as I feel uncomfortable to show my legs. I prefer leggings and biker boots but I have lots of high heel shoes at home (I love to own them but don’t wear them often… weirdo). So I put them to use every once in a while.
I also have a weird passion for fake fur jackets especially when they are super puffy - funny (with ears for example) and with strange colors. I know it sounds silly but I feel so comfortable that some people say my face kind of changes too and is more relaxed. Eeeeeh!! I am strange, I know.
Jessica Mae:
What is your favorite shade of lipstick right now?
Cristina:
Redrum by Jeffree Star cosmetics. Awesome shade of red.
Jessica Mae:
If you had to choose one beauty product that is your favorite, what would it be??
Cristina:
The Beauty blender, it changed my whole makeup universe!!!!
(Check out this link for some great tips on how to clean the beauty blender)
Jessica Mae:
Your eyeliner is always so rich in color. What brand do you like to use?
Cristina:
The Kat Von D one (tattoo liner in shade Trooper), is pretty cool!
Jessica Mae:
What is your favorite brand of makeup and/or beauty products?
Cristina:
Anastasia Beverly Hills, Becca, Bare Minerals, Kat Von D, Urban Decay, Benefits, Jeffree star, Beauty Blender.
Jessica Mae:
And I think everybody probably wants to know... how long does it take you to get ready before a show?
Cristina:
Not much!! I don’t spend a lot of time putting makeup on, definitely waaaaay under half an hour. And in the case of need, a few minutes at best :-)

1. For clients who have dry & damaged hair; how long before the wedding should they get on a care routine in order to repair their hair and see results?
It all depends on the style that the beautiful bride is looking for. If your hair has been compromised by excessive bleaching, a care routine which includes deep weekly conditioning, monthly haircuts, and also a product regiment by Kerastase that your Kerastase Stylist can recommend . My "must have" recommendation for any bride is "Initialiste" by Kérastase. It will help your hair grow faster, be super shiny, and also help to give a denser feel.
2. How long before the wedding do you recommend getting a hair cut & color?
If your Wedding Day Hair is going to be different from your usual style, I would design a Hair plan to ensure a flawless day. I recommend a cut and color twelve weeks before the wedding to make sure it comes out the right way. Then, two weeks beforehand (unless you are a bleach and tone, in which case you'll want about a week out) color and treat with deep conditioner. No haircut within 3 weeks from your wedding.
3. What type of extensions do you recommend if a client is wanting to add length & volume to their hair for their wedding?
Always ask your stylist for their best recommendation. Tape-ins work very well for adding thickness around the face, otherwise I prefer clip-ins the day of your wedding on most brides. Of course you'll want to make sure they are cut and colored to match for your final wedding day Hair look.
4. For the day of, some stylists recommend having hair that is a few days dirty so it holds better. Is this true and if not how should a client prepare their hair for the day of their wedding?
Never. Clean Hair is always the way to be wedding day ready :-). At WarPaint International, our Artisans are equipped with the professional products needed to add texture and grip so that your style feels secure and comfortable. On your wedding day, most of us will ask a bride to wash her hair that morning and apply the amount of conditioner needed for the hair texture she has. Also, please refrain from using any styling products unless directed. We will spray, wrap, set, pin, straighten, curl, and provide you with the all the luxuries that your wedding day needs. Always consult with your stylist if you have any questions. We are here for you, always.
5. Many brides struggle with what hair style to pick for their big day. What are your recommendations for choosing a hair style that fits the bride’s personality, the venue & the dress?
In today's world? Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, Magazines, Bridal shows, Google, your friends who have been married, your hairdresser, and yes, even the Mother of the Bride :-). You have endless tools to help you find the perfect "I do " hairstyle to make your day magical. Many Brides today will send us "Pins" from Pinterest, as its fun to scroll through the options and easy to communicate with our team of WarPaint Artisans. Stress, weather, and other external forces will often dictate what our skin looks like but there are many things can be done leading up to your big day in terms of a skincare ritual that can help alleviate this from happening. I'll address the most common questions about wedding day skin care tips below.
1. How long before a bride's wedding should she start a skin care regimen to improve tone and texture of her skin?
A consistent treatment and product regimen should be between 2-4 months prior to the wedding. For more mature skin, where there can be more concerns with uneven color, laxity, lines and wrinkles; 4 months is crucial. Acne problems can be stubborn and controlling, so it can take more time to get it under control- start earlier for better results. For someone with little concern, but looking to get a fabulous glow and texture improvement to the skin; 2 months can be enough. All the while for all people, using an AM and PM skincare routine to maximize and maintain is important to ensure the BEST results for the big day!
2. What is the difference between a facial and a peel? What type of results can you expect to see from each?
A facial is deep cleansing, mildly exfoliating, and hydrating. A chemical peel is regenerating, smoothing, pore minimizing, tone evening and can be antibacterial depending on which used. The two compliment each other so much, the best results can really be seen when done together.
3. For brides that are looking to reduce the appearance of acne scars, what treatment would you recommend?
It can really depend on the skin color and skin type for this one. More olive skin types can get brown discoloration on spots of acne, which would then be treated best with IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and/or a medium-depth chemical peel. For lighter skin types with red/pink scars, Derma-pen treatments would be the best. For "ice pick" or any scar that causes an indentation in the skin, Derma-pen would also be ideal.
4. For us "oily-skinned" gals, what products and treatments do you recommend to help reduce oiliness?
Being an "oily gal" myself, I've always tried to find the best combination to conquer the shine! For treatments - definitely peels. These help to shed the built up layers of dead skin and thickness that can lead to excess oil. The best are medium depth peels. (The Vitalize Peel or The Perfect Peel)
The best products to help exfoliate to maintain the results of the peels and flush out and shrink pores are professional strength Retinol, Alpha Hydroxy acids and the amazing Clarisonic Cleansing Brush with deep pore or acne brush head.
5. For the night before wedding prep; what can a bride do to ensure a radiant flawless glow?
The night before, exercise if possible to stimulate circulation, a hot bath with a mask suited for their specific skin type, drinking TONS of water to flush toxins and hydrate the skin from the inside out and of course plenty of sleep. Using a satin or silk pillowcase will prevent "sleep lines". All this along with topically applying a professional Retinol cream or Alpha Hydroxy cream along with an individually suited luxurious eye and lip cream will have the skin canvas perfect for a WarPaint International Makeup Artist to work their magic for impeccable skin!
Below are some examples of skin care procedure before and afters. Click them to expand and have a closer look at the results.
I offer the "Perfect Derma Peel", which is a bride and mother-of-the-bride favorite.
What ingredients are in Perfect Derma Peel?
Glutathione - an anti-aging ingredient and skin lightener.
Kojic Acid - skin lightener. (The combination of both these ingredients are unique to this peel)
Trichloroacetic Acid
Salicylic Acid
Phenol
Retin-A
Vitamin C
- The percentages are not noted as this is a proprietary blend, however this is proven to help with Melasma, Rosacea, Hyper-pigmentation, acne and some other skin problems.
Is it safe for all Fitzpatrick's (Skin type scale - 1-6, 1 = super pale white to 6 = dark black)?
Yes, the "Perfect Derma Peel" is safe for all skin types.
How long do you leave it on?
Six hours. Overnight if there is no discomfort for you.
How long does the Perfect Derma Peel last?
Results with maintenance can last a long time. It can be done 3 - 4 times per year (4 - 6 weeks apart) and with the Perfect A it will elongate the effects. How long this procedure lasts depends on how well you care for your skin (i.e. staying out of the sun, tanning, etc).
What does a kit cost and what does it include?
Its $300 for a kit. It includes six customer take home kits with six peels in a kit and A moisturizer and Retin-A pads.

This question comes up every day. Do you ask the advice of your friends? Do your friends do it for you? Do you hit the internet? Do you need these services? The answer largely depends on you and you alone, but I do have a story to tell. This story is for both brides-to-be and beauty service providers. There are many pitfalls to arranging the day of your wedding. My story and advice on how to master the beauty aspect of it is in these following paragraphs.
I am a makeup artist. I also operate a beauty agency called WarPaint International, so my team is full of professional hair and makeup artisans. We help our clients "Prepare For Battle", in that life is a stage and everyday is a showcase to the world. We focus on special evenings (nights on the town), life events (such as weddings), print / editorial and corporate jobs. These are all special occasions that require 100% attention and talent from myself and my team. But in all my years of working in the beauty industry I have been taught the best (and hardest) lessons from my bridal clients.
I have been a bride and I know what my own expectations of that day were. But it wasn't my expectations alone that weighed heavy on the decision process; it's the mother of the bride, the best friend, the mother-in-law's best friend, the groom. Everyone will have their opinions and directives on how your day is supposed to go. So let's answer a few questions from the point of view of an artist, a bride, and a perfectionist.
1. Do I need to have my hair and makeup professionally done? I mentioned above that it's entirely up to you, but you have expectations of your day. Chances are you've hired a photographer to capture these moments and quite honestly they have expectations of you. I work with many photographers and though many of their styles are different, they all hope and ask for one simple thing. Makeup.
The beauty of being a bride is the ability to focus on the essence of your natural beauty. Often times, we work with brides that are seeking a flawless, natural look to simply enhance their own features. Even the slightest bit of high quality foundation, applied by a professional that is analyzing your jaw line and looking for your natural curves, can create a photographer's heaven. The time they {the photographers} will spend cleaning your photos up will be significantly reduced, possibly saving you money and certainly short cuts on your photos. Time is money in all service industries and every photographer will only deliver the photos to you that they feel exemplify their skills. High definition pores, redness and shiny spots are their least favorite thing in the world. If you're talking to a makeup artist that is selling you on the fact that you need a lot of makeup to be in front of a camera on your wedding, you should keep looking. If you're seeking advice from a family member or friend telling you that you're beautiful the way you are... keep looking. Not that you aren't beautiful just as you are, but I think you get my point. Minimally hire a pro to help enhance your natural features, you'll still look like you we promise. A little mascara and foundation {applied correctly} makes all the difference ladies!
That "ah ha" moment when a bride first looks in the mirror... It's what drives me to keep going.
2. Where do I find quality makeup and hair artists? This is a tough one. As I've grown in this industry, I've come to realize there are so many "artists" out there that are simply selling something that they are not. I started at ground zero too, but my credentials and skill sets (along with my team) have built along the way. Many times we have brides that come to us after having hired other company's or independent artists whom have willingly lost their down payments (if not more) to walk away because they came out of the trial completely orange, unfinished, or looking like they were going to the club. When your livelihood depends on listening skills and mastering your craft, you simply can't deliver poor service. Do your research, ask your friends, read online reviews, ask other vendors you've hired (tip: your photographer and wedding planner should have a few great recs for you!).
Your makeup & hair artists should make you feel cared for, confident and beautiful. They should offer suggestions of what will look great on you, but also respect your input and redirect the vision if you're not feeling it. A true professional will ask you lots of questions to find out what your personal style is so they can mesh it together with their artistic vision.
So where do you find great talent? I think it requires diligence on your part. WarPaint International advertises on the Theknot.com, amongst other avenues. There is a lot of great talent there, but there are also some that lack the necessary qualifications. Here are my recommendations for selecting a great Artisan to knock your day out of the park.
A. Communication. It starts with you. Provide your phone number when filling out an inquiry; don't passive aggressively price shop through email. It hurts you and it hurts the service provider. There is no harm in having a good conversation to feel out the other person, listen to their mannerisms, and ask detailed questions. Get on the phone or meet in person.
B. Product. Do they use quality products that stand up to heat, time, different skin types, etc, etc. Ask your artists what products they use! Professionals use a variety of products so if you're not familiar with a line that someone is using, give yourself time to check into it. Are they cutting corners? Also knowing what products you will need to have on hand for touch ups later in your day is good information to have too. Ask your artist.
C. Trials. You must have one. I do not waiver on this topic. The trial is the perfect time to test out your vision for your wedding day hair and makeup, not only to see how it will look on you and if your artist can execute it to your liking, but also to see how your look stands the test of time. Knowing if your beachy waves and nude lip will last 12+ hours is a necessity. Some people's hair just doesn't hold a curl well, so perhaps trying a different hair product or opting for a half up half down style will better suit your needs. These are all things {and more} that you will go over and try out. Never skip a trial, specifically if you're a makeup artist. Skin allergies, acne, sensitivities and other unknowns can destroy a wedding day and cause a lot of un-necessary friction. Don't do it. For out of town brides; find some time even if it's only 30mins for a "mini" trial. You will be thankful in the end, because who wants to try to pick out what eye shadow shades they want on the morning of your wedding? You will most likely have no clue what you want and it will cause undue stress on you. Have a trial done so you know exactly what to expect from your hair & makeup on the day of the wedding.
D. Presentation. In my opinion branding is everything. Does your artist show up on time? Do they have a makeup trunk or organizer? Are they organized & clean inside? Are their tools clean? Do they conduct themselves professionally, balancing chit chat with completing their mission? Do your personalities mesh well? Do you have fun with your artist? Getting ready for your wedding should be and is the pre-party and these are the details that can make or break your day.
E. Skin & Hair recommendations. Talk to your artist. A good beauty professional understands skin and hair and the products that help it. When WarPaint is hired by a bride we ask specific questions about her skin, hair and other details of her day. This ensures that myself and my team are prepared with necessary products prior to the trial taking place. We also have tons of pre-wedding day and day of skin care tips. It helps our brides get through stress related breakouts and makes our job that much easier by arriving to a clean palette. Also, finding out how close to the big day you should have your color & cut done or if any other hair treatments are needed to get your hair in shape are essential steps for a successful style. Ask your beauty professional what preparation they want you to do before your day arrives.
F. Contracts. If you're a bride or a service provider, a contract will save you in the end. Think of this as a legal relationship. Everything that you agree upon should be in writing; the cost of the service, how many people are having services done, is there travel? If so, how far and what does that cost? Are there extra add-ons? Are there special needs? When discussing these items and and signing off on them, you are freeing yourself from ambiguity, poor customer service, and disappointment or unrealistic expectations. Furthermore contracts protect you as the client. Over the years we have had brides call us in tears because the artist they hired months ago bailed on them and even worse - they DIDN'T SHOW UP on the day of the wedding! Contracts, they are an absolute must and a professional will require it.
G. Deposits. A true professional should require one to secure your date during a busy wedding season. Brides should be happy to pay a deposit to their beauty professional. There is a lot of room for error on both ends and tying the date to a financial amount up front makes things more seamless for both parties. I worked with a couple of brides this year that "hired" a makeup artist and just days before their wedding they cancelled on the bride to travel or engage in some personal endeavor. These are not professionals working in the industry; rather a side gig artist that does not take your special day for the urgency that you require them to.
F. Price. This is one area where price often equals quality. As many artists grow in their career, they develop skills and experiences that can only be gained through hard work and time. A bride or any other client should expect to pay for this. If you are seeking a rockstar to deliver incredible results that were exactly what you had hoped for, you will most likely pay rockstar prices. Price points in the $150 - $350+ range for a bridal makeup package (including the trial) are not uncommon, hair packages (including the trial) can range from $190-$400+ and can be dependent upon the city/location. Remember you're not just paying your beauty pro(s) for the 45-60 minutes of service time for your trial and day of wedding service. You are paying for their expertise, time, their undivided attention for your wedding day, the days leading up to it and everything in-between. On average WarPaint International will spend 12-18+ hours on one wedding from the time the bride first inquires to when we send her a thank you note. There are a lot of things that happen behind the scenes that most brides don't realize. So before you go thinking that you're going to pay $50 for your wedding makeup and have service like a queen, think again.
G. Day of appointment schedule. This is another key element for a successful wedding day beauty experience. We provide all of our brides with a day of appointment schedule. This ensures you, the bride, that you and your wedding party will finish on time. It also keeps the beauty team focused and on point. A good rule of thumb is to allow an additional 30 minutes on the back end in case someone needs a touch up, runs late or for any other reason- a wedding day is a day to expect the unexpected so be prepared. And to be quite frank; brides if the beauty pro that you are looking into doesn't offer to do this for you as part of their package...keep looking.
H. Reviews. Does the artist/company you're looking into have any online reviews or testimonials? How many do they have? Do the reviews give you a clear idea of what to expect with this artist? This can help you narrow down your search.
I. Website. Important! Does the artist/company have a professional presence online? This is another piece that can give you a clear picture of what to expect if you hire this artist/company. A website, in my opinion, is a first impression. It should be treated as though you're on a first date. Obviously we can't always judge a book by it's cover, but part of being a professional is setting a professional image.
J. Portfolio. This is an important tool to see the artist's experience and style. However, I don't believe this should be the end all be all. Professional artists are able to create any desired look a client requests {within reason of course}. It's important to remember that the images you see are looks that were requested by the client. **Disclaimer: Pinterest & Instagram...while these are great places to source inspiration please keep in mind that these images have been "doctored" up. Keeping a realistic vision of your look is really important. We all want to look like Kim K, but if you've got blonde hair and blue eyes the chances you'll be her twin are slim to none. ;-)
3. How far in advance should I hire my beauty team? Don't wait until the last minute! We recommend booking your beauty team 8-12 months in advance. Not only will this give you piece of mind and the ability to check this off your list - but many high end, professional teams/companies book out that far in advance. If you want the best, you need to plan for it girl!
Above all else, remember - this is your wedding day! Your beauty choices are critical, not only so you look great for one day, but so that you can look back on the memories of getting ready that morning and feel happy about who you spent the morning with. Furthermore your makeup & hair will live on forever in your images. Pamper yourself. Do it right. Set aside the money to relax and "Prepare For Battle".
Here are some guidelines for professionals in the beauty industry to help maintain your brand, integrity & reputation.
1. Always require a trial for bridal hair & makeup. Even for out of state brides. The trial (also known as consultation or preview) is meant to not only "test" out the brides look, but to get to know her and work out any kinks. In the event your bride is out of town insist that you get some face time with her even if it's only 30 mins the night before the wedding. If you don't do a trial you are only setting yourself up for a mess the day of. That's not good for you or the client.
2. Having a client contract signed along with a deposit should be required to book/secure a wedding date. Just do it. Trust me. For many reasons this is important, one is that your client will take you more seriously. Two, it protects you as the artist. Your time is valuable, weddings are a lot of work and the last thing you want is your bride canceling on you at the last minute because her cousin is now going to do her hair and makeup for free. A contract and a deposit makes the client less apt to cancel at the last minute.
3. Ask your clients several questions. For example "What is your skin health like?', "Do you have any tattoos that need to be covered?", "What is your daily makeup routine like?". That way you will come prepared to the trial and also the wedding. If you need to purchase additional tools to cover a tattoo you will have ample time to do so and also try it out.
4. Be prompt in responding to your client. Remember- this is one of the most important days of her life. If she emails you asking a question it's because she needs an answer. I discourage text message communication unless it's the morning of the wedding and you are shooting the bride (or member of the wedding party) a message to find out what room number they are in etc.
5. Communication. The second time I've listed this because it's so important. Be clear in your expectations of your client(s). Provide them with all and any information they need to know about pricing and billing. No one likes sudden changes in what is expected, so be clear with her/him.
