A Personal Journey Towards Safe Beauty Products

When it comes to beauty, you’ve likely heard buzz words like: natural, organic, cleaner, safer, green, and non-toxic. But what does this really mean, and why would someone who has built a career in the health and wellness industry get involved?

Jennifer’s story: Beautycounter

When it comes to beauty, you’ve likely heard buzz words like: natural, organic, cleaner, safer, green, and non-toxic. But what does this really mean, and why would someone who has built a career in the health and wellness industry get involved?

As the co-creator of the top-performing class format and Teacher Training program at one of the largest yoga and fitness company’s in the world, I’m grateful to be the Director of Programming and Teacher Training at a Twin Cities-based company where I create class formats and develop accredited teacher training programs and workshops that allow movement enthusiasts to take their teaching and practices to the next level. When I first stepped onto a yoga mat, I instantly connected with the physical and mental benefits of the practice, as well as the extraordinary teachers and students. The Twin Cities yoga community inspired me to leave corporate cube life and dive into a full-time health and wellness gig.

So, you’d think I’m “healthy”, right? Me too.

Childhood symptoms

Since the age of 10 or 11, I’ve suffered from debilitating migraines, which 85% of women suffer from. There was a point in my life where I was in and out of the hospital every other week and wondered how I’d finish high school or go to college. After visiting countless doctors, and mostly due to my personal research, I was able to pinpoint the role hormones played in my sickness - 80% of women suffer from hormonal imbalance.

At my wits end, and at the encouragement of a natural doctor, I started to learn the severe impact the products I slather on my body everyday could be having on my hormones – and my overall health. To put it lightly, I was furious! As human beings, we’re taught to believe that if we workout and eat well, we’re healthy, so when I learned that the last notable law regarding the safety of what I use on my largest organ every single day was passed over 80 years ago and bans a measly 30 ingredients out of the hundreds of thousands on the market, I had to take action. It’s 2019 in the US. This is a common-sense issue like no smoking on airplanes and seatbelts in cars!

Beautycounter. A safer way to beauty

Simply put, I joined a company that’s fighting every single day to regulate those buzz words. Enter Beautycounter - it changed my life. They are advocating for more health-protective laws in the largest consumer industry and that are providing safe, high-performing product options.

Some other organizations tried to blaze the way. Since 2004, there has been a movement called “Campaign for Safe Cosmetics” which has used smarts and sass to pressure the cosmetics industry to make safer products.

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics coalition, a project of Breast Cancer Prevention Partners (formerly the Breast Cancer Fund), works to protect the health of consumers, workers and the environment through public education and engagement, corporate accountability and sustainability campaigns and legislative advocacy designed to eliminate dangerous chemicals linked to adverse health impacts from cosmetics and personal care products.

The Campaign has educated millions of people about the problem of toxic chemicals in cosmetics, which has led to an increased demand for safer products in the marketplace. Now hundreds of cosmetic companies fully disclose ingredients and avoid the use of cancer-causing chemicals, reproductive toxicants and other unsafe chemicals, demonstrating these practices are not only possible, but profitable. Retailers, too, are becoming part of the solution by requiring the national brands they sell to eliminate chemicals of concern and practice a higher level of ingredient transparency.

It’s progress, but we have a very long way to go in the United States with our journey towards safe beauty products…

Change was imminent

I had no choice. I did my research and changed this one simple aspect of my life to help carve the way for healthier living. My journey to safe beauty products pointed to Beautycounter for a few reasons. I crave connection with passionate, like-minded women, I saw an opportunity to work to pay off my pricey private school degree while making a significant social impact, and because I haven’t been this passionate about anything since becoming a fitness and yoga teacher.

BUT, change also happened because of these daunting and debilitating reasons.

  • I’ve suffered from unexplained debilitating migraines for almost two decades.

  • I care about my body and take care of myself by exercising and eating in moderation.

  • I’ve been lucky enough to make a career in the fitness industry and had NO clue the garbage I was slathering on my body every single day.

  • My hormones are already crazy enough without using products that could disrupt them even more.

  • Infertility is way too close to me and could be me (because…I was to control the controllable).

  • Everyone has someone close to them who died way too young from the C word (big love, sweet Allie).

  • Our government has not passed a meaningful federal law regulating personal care products since 1938.

  • The current legislation is less than two pages long and has sizable loopholes.

  • This legislation bans a measly 30 ingredients (compared to 1500+ in the EU), allowing products that contain potentially harmful toxins onto our counters and into our cabinets.

  • I can be a voice in this crucial mission.

  • We ALL deserve better.

  • When we know better, we do better.

Because Beautycounter was the #1 trending beauty brand of 2018.

The Never List™

Beautycounter produces “The Never List” on their website. I’ve dropped those items below here so you can see some of the things we allow to be consumed in our daily routines that have long-term health affects for you and your family. The list is about 1500 products deep globally; the United States only bans 30 of them. Many of these product are cancer-causing and we let our skin soak them in every day of our lives. In an un-related article, you may find it interesting that dogs can detect cancer.

5 Essential Products for Makeup Beginners

Whether you’ve just entered the world of beauty products or you’re looking to brush up on your makeup skills, knowing what to include in your essentials kit is the first step in becoming a makeup pro. Once you have the basics sorted, you can move on to finding more unique variations of your favorite makeup and create your own style.

In this post, we’ll take a look at some of the basic items that you can pick up from the beginning. We’ve also included a bit of information on each product, as well as a few recommendations to help you get started. So, without further ado, here are the essentials that you should have on hand for your daily routine.

Foundation and Concealer

When it comes to achieving a tone and level of concealment that you like, these two important ingredients should be number one on your shopping list. Starting off, your foundation should be light and natural. The last thing you want to do as a beginner is cake your face with too much makeup.

CC Cream is a great option that provides sufficient coverage. Maybelline and IT Cosmetics are two affordable and reliable brands to check out for your foundation and concealer needs. Be sure to apply a light amount starting off and don’t forget to cover around your eyes and below your jawline.

Eyelash Extensions

Unlike mascara and fake lashes, extensions last for up to a month with good maintenance and can help you achieve a fuller, longer and more versatile look without much fuss. The Lash Professional offers a comprehensive range of high quality, affordable eyelash extension supplies to help you get started. They also have a professional guide on everything you need to know about eyelash extensions.

Primer

If you want to achieve a smoother skin texture and fill in any lines or blemishes before applying foundation, pick up some primer. Application is simple and easy, requiring nothing more than a good brush. Here are some tips to help you apply primer like a pro.

Brushes

Leave your fingers for the moisturizer and pick up a good set of brushes for all your makeup applications. A brush makes applying and blending makeup a much more efficient, effective and hygienic process. It’s also easier to mix and match different tones and colors. BH Cosmetics has a pretty solid range of brushes for you to get started with. Sigma Beauty also has a great line up with something for everyone.

Sigma Beauty Dimensional Brush Set

Sigma Beauty Dimensional Brush Set

An Eyebrow Kit

Natural brows are awesome but still require some maintenance. A simple set including tweezers, scissors, brushes and a pencil is all you need if you’re blessed with great looking eyebrows. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for all of us and a bit of help from a more advanced brow kit is often necessary. Here’s a list with some great eyebrow kits for beginners.

Now that you have the essentials, it’s time to dive into the rabbit hole of makeup kits. The countless variety of products will inevitably be a little overwhelming at first, but with enough experience and know-how, you’ll eventually get the hang of it. Just don’t get too carried away - makeup can be expensive!

2019 Makeup Trends

Keep an open mind and know that trends aren’t for everyone. I’m a huge proponent to taking something mainstream and making it your own, so as you read through these trends think about fun ways to incorporate them that is authentic to who YOU are.

Makeup Trends for 2019

Happy 2019! I am so excited to share some of my favorite makeup trends that you’ll be seeing a lot of this year.

When this year’s Pantone color of the year was announced I was really excited as coral is a great way to give yourself a fresh pick me up!
— Jessica Mae

Before we dive in, I encourage you to keep an open mind and know that trends aren’t for everyone. I’m a huge proponent to taking something mainstream and making it your own, so as you read through these trends think about fun ways to incorporate them that are authentic to who YOU are. This year you will notice the common theme of pops of color, some fun with glitter and neutral tones on the eyes. So let's do this! But first, follow me on Facebook for my live tutorials and product reviews.

The Power Lip

For me, nothing turns my day around or puts me into state quite like a power lip! One of my ultimate favs to rock is Nevermore from Elixery. If you’re new to a bold lip and feel intimidated… try sheering out the color with some clear gloss to make it a bit more translucent and less of a pow when you’re getting a feel for what works for you with this look. Another tip … when rocking a power lip the intention is that our lips are the statement piece, honor that by making the rest of your makeup more subdued.

Power lip

Power Lip!

Bring out your inner boss babe in 2019!

Pantone Color of the Year: Living Coral.

When this year’s Pantone color of the year was announced I was really excited as coral is a great way to give yourself a fresh pick me up! I’ve found the easiest way to do this is to pop some coral onto the lips and cheeks. My favorite product is Ingenue lipstick from Elixery Cosmetics in Minneapolis. It’s the perfect coral shade for most skin tones and bonus…it doubles as a cheek stain! Who doesn’t love that? If your’e feeling a little extra, find your favorite coral shadow and pop some on your lids too! Tip: if you’re new to using a lipstick as a cheek stain start by putting a little on your finger tips and patting it onto the apples of your cheeks. Then blend blend blend. A little goes a long way.

All. The. Glitter.

I know what you’re thinking…”glitter? really?”. Yes, really! Glitter is a super fun way to add a little pop of glam to your look. It can get out of hand so that’s why I recommend practicing in a controlled environment preferably away from fans and small children…haha I’m kidding. But really, glitter can get crazy so I do recommend the Statement Palette from Beauty Counter. This is an awesome palette that has a mixture of matte and shimmer shadows, but it also has an awesome glitter shadow that is pretty much fool proof.

Tip: Sweep a little of Beauty Counter’s Crown on your lids alone for a fun glitter look that’s appropriate for the office or anywhere you plan to be!

No Makeup, Makeup

This trend has been gaining popularity for the last couple of years and 2019 will be no exception. I personally love this look for everything, it lets the world see the true beauty that you are! My favorite 3 products to create this look are:

War 14.jpg

Beautiful You

Showcase your natural beauty!

Taupe Smokey Eyes.

You’ll be seeing a lot of neutral tones on the eyes in 2019. My favorite is this new take on an oldie but goodie, the smokey eye. Typically a smokey eye includes tones of greys, charcoals and black, but this year we are seeing taupe as the the smokey element to this look. I personally feel this makes a smokey eye look way more versatile because neutral taupe tones are a lot softer and can be worn at work but also works for night on the town. You can keep the smoke nice and light or deepen it for a more dramatic effect as well. To perfect this look I love the Classic Palette from Beauty Counter.

How To Keep Your Makeup From Running When You're Sweaty

Any woman who’s performed in front of a crowd knows how stressful it can be. The human body is a marvelous, powerful thing, but it tends to react in the extreme when we’re faced with any stress of our own. This leads to one of makeup’s biggest enemies: sweat.

How to keep makeup from running

Any woman who’s performed in front of a crowd knows how stressful it can be. The human body is a marvelous, powerful thing, but it tends to react in the extreme when we’re faced with any stress of our own. This leads to one of makeup’s biggest enemies: sweat.

When makeup is up against so many odds from bright, hot lights to sweaty skin, how do you keep your makeup looking it’s best? How do celebrities preserve their perfect looks on the red carpets and when it’s heating up on sets? What about the performers and dancers of the world who break a sweat during their time on stage? Here are tips from the experts for keeping your makeup from running when you’re sweaty.

How To Keep Your Makeup From Running When You're Sweaty

Start with a primer

If your makeup doesn’t have the right base, it’ll be more likely to slide right off your face. Just like when you paint a wall in your house, you have to start with a fresh coat of primer. While your face isn’t exactly a wall, the same principle applies. If you’re prone to oily skin or excessive sweat, you especially should consider using a primer.

When selecting a face primer, opt for one built for your skin type. If you’re prone to oil, choose a mattifying or smoothing primer which will keep your face from getting that shiny look. If you have a lot of redness, opt for a color correcting primer with green undertones.

Choose your foundation wisely

You don’t want to overdo it with your foundation when you’re likely to be sweating. For example, if it’s the height of summer on your wedding day, don’t go for the heaviest coverage you can find. These will only bleed down your face throughout the day. Instead, opt for powder or airbrush makeup. Powder makeup is lighter and stays put much more effectively than liquid foundation.

Additionally, airbrush makeup provides consistent, moderate coverage without appearing heavy. Because it’s applied in a very fine mist, it has a stronger staying power. Airbrushed makeup lasts longer and feels lighter. Because it allows your pores to breath, you’re less likely to feel overheated throughout the day.

Don’t listen to makeup that claims to be sweat-proof. Natural, high-quality makeup is naturally sweat-proof. Because it contains talc as a binding agent, it has natural abilities to stick to your skin without sliding throughout the day. This is yet another reason to be meticulous when selecting the right foundation for your needs.

How To Keep Your Makeup From Running When You're Sweaty

Set your makeup

Finally, your makeup needs to be set after application to guarantee it stays where you want it. Using a setting powder will help absorb any excess oil and sweat, so it’s a great first layer. Aside from setting powder, a setting spray will add another barrier between your makeup and the outside world.

Look for a setting spray that doesn’t have any alcohol on the ingredients list. Using a setting spray with alcohol is drying to the face which can cause cracks in your foundation. You wouldn’t risk driving without insurance, would you? Why would you waste your makeup without setting it with powder and spray?

Be prepared to blot

No matter what you do, some sweat might still sneak through. This is okay if you’re prepared with the right tools for touching up your look. It might be tempting to jump right to re-applying your makeup when you see signs of it slipping, but don’t start there. It’s smarter to blot with oil blotting paper or a paper towel to get rid of excessive oil before you touch up your look. If you skip this step, there won’t be much for your makeup to stick to.

Look to the pros

Finally, take a hint from the professionals. Dancers, for example, rock their full-faces of makeup despite harsh lights and high stress. They use professional-level makeup to make sure they have perfect performances every time. Alexandra has the perfect dance shoes just as professional dancers use high-quality makeup and professional application.

If you’re planning for your big day, whether it’s a performance or even your wedding day, you might consider professional help. A qualified makeup artist can help you establish a sweat-proof beauty routine. In the meantime, use the tips above to keep your face looking fresh all day long.

Top 10 Reasons to Hire Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists on your Wedding Day.

Have you considered the top reasons to hire a professional makeup artist or hair stylist for your wedding day? How about a Beauty Agency? Would your freelance artist pass a criminal background check? Here are our Top 10 reasons to hire a pro and some reasons to book your wedding with WarPaint International.

Top Reasons to Hire Beauty Professionals on your Wedding Day

A Beauty Professional's Point of view.

So, you're doing your own hair and makeup...

Have you considered the reasons to hire a makeup artist or hair stylist for your wedding day? While there are many reasons to hire a makeup artist AND hair stylists for your wedding, they are all rooted in looking your best on your special day. Your wedding will be forever remembered through wedding photographs and the hiring of professional artists will help ensure that you are flawless and beautiful the day of and in the lasting memories of the event.

Furthermore, the benefits of a Beauty Agency vs. freelance artists are numerous. Considering the financial commitment and high expectations, the "beauty" of not worrying about the last minute proverbial bus - sickness, criminal backgrounds, poor character, or other hurdles - is a benefit that only reputable agencies can provide. Read our top 10 reasons why you need a professionally vetted makeup school graduate and hair stylist on your wedding day.

1. Be stress-free on your wedding day

Of all the reasons to hire a professional makeup artist and hair stylist for your wedding day, this may be the single most important benefit. Take it from experienced brides... your wedding day is guaranteed to be busy and will likely include a few unexpected challenges, so don’t let your appearance be one of them. You shouldn’t have to spend time worrying if your eyeliner is straight while ensuring that your vendors deliver on time. Any reputable artist that is a professional will meet with you prior to your wedding day to do a trial run of the makeup look or hairstyle you want. On the day-of, your beauty team rolls in, on location, and knows your skin type, your desired outcome, your theme, and any complications in the trial.

P.S. Your photographer will love you for it

See how your booking process looks with WarPaint International Beauty Agency.

The Bride Experience. Your booking process with WarPaint International Beauty Agency.

2. You want to look "natural"

Professional makeup artists study the art of their craft. They live it and breathe it like a musician, and the proper selection of colors is part of their DNA. From your foundation to your lips to the perfect eyeliner, makeup artists know how to choose the colors that match your unique character and features. Your wedding day will keep you photographed, possibly more than any day in your life. High definition optics can do some interesting things to your complexion and pores.

Even if you tend to live in the "natural" state and your photographer does to, find a makeup artist that specializes in "natural" looks so that your memories and face-to-face interactions are striking and memorable. The natural look is far more involved than most brides think. In fact, what most people categorize as difficult is the avant-garde, high-fashion looks you see all over the internet. If this were the case, more Instagram makeup artists would be showcasing breathtaking, natural looking brides than stamping out glorified brows and winged eyeliner.

3. Professional grade products that last

Like it or not, there is a big difference behind mainstream, less expensive makeup and hair products vs. professional grade products that have been engineered for specific applications. Since makeup artists apply cosmetics for a living and hair stylists test the quality of hair products every single day, most have a kit stocked with high quality (and possibly very expensive) products that are designed for wearability and flexibility that you may not own or be able to afford. Not to mention, most artists endure years of professional training to keep up with the trends, techniques, and industry concerns. You simply can't put a price on their experience or the luxury and intimacy of having them apply it and perfect it. It is after all, what they live for - your beauty.

4. Just enjoy the day

Don't fool yourself. You likely don't have the experience mentioned in point number 3, and even if you do why in the world would you want to exercise it on your own wedding day? Experienced makeup artists practice the art of makeup every single day. Experienced hair stylists nearly double that rate. Professional makeup artists and hair stylists have painted hundreds, if not thousands, of faces and designed hair in dozens of eras, themes, and personal taste categories. If you’re not a makeup artist or hair stylist and you haven’t studied the proper methods of executing flawless looks that withstand heat, wind, tears and very long days, then pass on the notion that you'll save a few dollars. The key to being a perfect bride is to be yourself; that usually still requires professionals to extract that state and keep it there for your wedding day.

On a more important note, most brides envision their day beginning in an artist's chair with champagne in hand and the loving banter of their bridal party - not a stress-filled morning of racing the clock and no human interaction.

5. Application techniques

It's not that you don't already wake up looking breathtaking... We actually wouldn't change a thing about you. Industry professionals study tricks to emphasize a person’s best facial features while disguising other, less flattering ones just by applying makeup. Hair stylists have an in-depth knowledge of hair types and tendencies, scalp problems, and product benefits. If you want to really highlight your eyes for your big day, your makeup artist can use special makeup techniques to make that happen without caking on the product.

Want to pull off a bold lip color, but are afraid of transferring it onto your groom when its time to “kiss the bride”? A professional makeup artist can help prevent that, too. Scared of your hair flying away or falling due to heat? Yeah.. they've got that covered.

6. Ensuring perfection

This is one of the most important pieces since the bulk of your day will be spent saying "CHEESE". Experienced makeup artists and hair stylists will sculpt your look using contouring techniques to add the illusion of depth in 2-dimensional photographs and in real life. You instantly turn into a 2-dimensional image instead of a 3-dimensional being when your photo is taken. If you choose to not use a makeup artist or hair stylist, you're likely to be a flat image in your captured memories. If you use a makeup artist that is not experienced, or your makeup and hair are applied and styled improperly, you'll also appear flat and in some bad cases that we've seen - orange! Lastly, you don't want to appear shiny, gray, over, or underdone. Perfection is the key. You are perfect, right?

7. Product, product, product

Like we mentioned above, beauty professionals use high-quality products that are blended with rigorous expertise. When you a hire a makeup artist or hair stylists for your wedding, you won’t have to worry about your makeup wearing off during your wedding festivities or your hair falling from its form. There are special primers, setting sprays and powders that your artists will know exactly how to apply to ensure complete bliss. Your groom may also be appreciative at the end of the day :-)

8. A cohesive look

It is amazing how many women will visually match their friends for Halloween, themed parties, even "pajama parties" but when it comes to their wedding day - the one day everyone should look the same - they turn the other cheek. Think about the last wedding you attended (or even stood for) that had no beauty or dress direction, no orchestration, and no attention to detail. Though that may be the personality of the wedded couple, it certainly spells frustration for their guests and mixed feelings about their captured memories. If cost is a factor, skip the bachelorette party and treat your ladies to luxurious beauty. Nothing is more memorable than sitting back together in a bridal suite, sipping champagne, laughing and letting the professionals unfold your beauty desires. Stress-free is the key and your entrance and impact to your guests will be memorable.

9. Trial pains...

We said it above, but its a pain point for many. We've met brides that have paid in full for 3 or more trials and come to realize they were dealing with an amateur, or their sister's friend or aunt (who can do it for them) and walked away only spending more money on the right fit.

Demand a trial. No makeup artist or hair stylist can walk into your wedding day and smash it out of the park. This relationship is an intimate one and takes discovery questions and a few dry runs in some cases. Always, always have a makeup and hair trial. You'd hate to be orange from the chin up on your wedding day, or worse yet... your artist leaves for Vegas instead.

10. Wedding day beauty schedules

Hire a Beauty Agency. Yes there are talented, dedicated freelance individuals all of whom deliver endlessly, but they do get sick, have car accidents, run late, endure family deaths, etc, etc. When hiring a beauty agency, your selection of top professionals is much broader, but the security of not having a mishap with an artist on your wedding day is alleviated. Even if your artist gets hit by the proverbial bus, their trial notes and opinions are available to the agency and an artist that matches their skill-sets and schedule will simply step in to ensure a flawless wedding day for you as if nothing ever happened. At WarPaint International, we screen our artists, do technical interviews to test their skill level and work with a wide array of schedules.

Criminal background checks. We are also a national partner to Trusted Employees, so we criminally background check our Artisans across state and federal databases for background information. We have passed on applicants that work for our competitors or on their own. You wouldn't want a convicted felon in your home, hotel room or personal space scoping out their options. Be smart when hiring on-site professionals.

4 Makeup tips for Older women

Secretly Plump your Lips

It might seem to you that your lips are getting thinner as you grow older. If you want to accentuate them, using a lip gloss may be the best thing that you can do. Nothing can work better than this actually!

You just have to add a little color first while filling in your lips with a lip liner or lipstick which should be a shade or two darker than the natural lip color that you want to use. Finally, once you are done, dab a bit of gloss on the top. Voila! You got an instant lip plumper.

Use Eye Pencils Rather than Eyeliners

Eye pencils are far more soft than eyeliners. So, opt for it instead of a liner which could be harsh on your aging eyes. If you want to soften the lines even more then don’t forget to smudge it with your fingers. Moreover, if you have smaller eyes then don’t line the inside of the eye. It will make your eyes appear even smaller.

If you’re over 50, these makeup tips certainly can help spruce up your look naturally.
— Arina

Definitely, go for Primer

As one ages, you can expect that your skin will eventually suffer from one or another of skin conditions. Along with you, your skin is aging, so, primer becomes something very significant for you before you do your makeup. If you apply a layer of primer before your makeup and your skin then it will let your eyeshadow, foundation, mascara and everything else flawlessly flaunt itself.

Moreover, if you use shadows then I recommend using primers for your eyes. Also, if you are going to apply foundation then opting for a primer before that seems to be an obvious step.

End of the Line

If you're over 50, these makeup tips certainly can help spruce up your look naturally. Stand up straight, do your makeup with confidene, and look as stunning as you did on your sweet sixteen!

Top 8 Nail Trends of 2017 Weddings

At a wedding, the focus is on the newlyweds, the complete future wife image, and your selection of dress to choice nails is especially evaluated. Trends can help you look on top even during such critical moments. It is important that you know all the subtleties that go into wedding nails in 2017.

It is important that you know all the subtleties that go into wedding nails in 2017.

The wedding involves a creative approach to nail art, using drawings, rhinestones, and paintings. The year 2017 is especially relevant to fashion and art during the all-important event where grooming the newlywed’s hands demand dexterity. If you are lacking in vision or just need to find out more about bridal nail trends, check out this list of eight best bridal nail trends that can also serve as a gift through services like Target Wedding Registry.

The Jeweled Embellishment

Nothing is more beautiful than that special moment when your husband slips that ring onto your finger. The ring is a symbol of eternal connection that should be offered the greatest honor. One way of honoring the ring is through adding special jeweled embellishments on the ring finger – and the extra adornment hints at the finger’s special job and significance in your life.

Embellishments are all the rage; the trend features a basic manicure in a single color like nail polish by Pink Gellac and special embellishments just on the ring finger. Not only is the trend gaining momentum in Miami and New York, but it is also a popular choice for women of every age.

Floral Elements

Maybe, your wedding is to take place outside, in a large church, or a beach. No matter your wedding’s venue, there will always be flowers around you. In most cases, flowers are incorporated into the veil, dress, décor, and bouquet; but this year, consider incorporating floral elements into your nail design.

If you love experimenting with your nails, then bright florals may be just what you want. The cute flowers will brighten up your beautiful attire as well as your bridal makeup. However, creating the look does require a steady hand and some good amount of practice – so, it can be challenging for your non-dominant hand.

Ombre Nails

Originally a hair color trend for many years, ombre has slowly worked itself into wedding nails. Like the hair craze, ombre nails are about creating a color gradient where a lighter color gradually blends into a darker one. Moreover, just like hair, finding the perfect ombre nail balance takes practice.

The process starts with prepping the nails with a base coat and picking three shades of the same color. Paint the lightest shade on the entire nail and use a makeup sponge dipped in the darkest color to paint from the tip of the nail down to about a third of the way. Sponge the shade that is between the other two to the middle of the nail, blending both colors together, and complete by applying a coat to smooth.

Crystalline Glitter

Another popular bridal phenomenon is the gorgeous crystal encrusted glitter nails. Highlighting your nails this way adds a special glamour and glitz to many different types of bridal traditions. This nail art also works at the reception just as it does during the main ceremony – imagine the sparkle when you lift your hand and your partner places the ring on your finger.

French Tip Manicure

Back in the 90s, French manicures were the rage, but fast forward to 2017 and they have made a comeback with a new look. Apart from changing the tip color, to making it look extremely edgy and adding a fun design, french manicures will have you shine as you stand at the altar. After all, weddings are about tradition and this wedding nail trend is the perfect way to embrace the best parts of your past and heritage while creating a new path into the future.

Nail Lace Cuff Effect

Delicate as lace, these gorgeous nails mimic the intricate lace designs that grace the cuff of bridal gowns. The lacework cuff effect embellishment is a popular bridal nail trend in 2017. You have the option of choosing this type of embellishment for every finger or make a subtle statement and only decorate a few.

Henna-Like Nail Embellishments

Inspired by the ancient cultures in Egypt and India, intricate henna patterns were originally painted on the skin, but they can also be reimagined on your nails. However, did you know that this form of nail art has been around for more than 7,000 years? These lovely nails will also look great on henna-covered hands or as part of the subtle decoration for brides from any cultural background.

Negative Space

The thing about this 2017 nail trend is that it involves letting your natural nail show through as is. However, the negative space nail trend means that your fingernails’ middle part is nude, decorating the tips or sides of the nails. The best look for you would be vertical or horizontal lines.

Top Tips for a Relaxed Wedding Morning

Top tips for a relaxed wedding morning.

Insights on must-do things on your wedding day morning are critical for the success of such and auspicious occasion. The reason is that the wedding day is one of the most important events in the life of any human being who believes in the sanctity and dignity of marriage. Additionally, the morning of that day can cause many unexpected challenges that can disrupt or even cancel the wedding day.

At the very least, hand your phone to your maid of honor or a trusted friend and put them in charge of communication and basic decision making.

Here, many brides have different thoughts confronting them with “what ifs?”. Some of them worry about the possibility of the bridegroom showing up late while others about some misfortune befalling them or their bridegrooms.  Whatever the reason, you can make deliberate efforts to remain relaxed so that you approach your wedding with a sober mind. In our post, we'll look at some top tips that will enable you to achieve this elusive calm.

Lay out your dress and accessories

Your wedding gown and beauty accessories are critical tools you will need to look “wow” on your joyous day. Therefore, lay them out so that your photographer does not disturb you to make hasty adjustments while taking those memorable photos of you as you leave your parents’ house.

Get to bed early

If you want to enjoy the morning of your marriage ceremony, get to sleep early and be in a relaxed mood on the eve of your wedding. The reason for this is that a good night's sleep will help in calming down your excitement and keep your mind relaxed all through the night as you count hours and minutes to say, “Yes I do.”

Getting good rest is not just for your wedding day. You may want to check out these top tips to get your beauty rest. The age-old idea of having a bachelor/bachelorette party the night before your wedding is bad news for you, your future spouse and your family. Stay focused and enjoy the biggest day of your life.

Spoil yourself

Top tips to keep you relaxed on your wedding morning

Another tip to help you remain relaxed on your auspicious day is spoiling yourself that morning. You can have a warm bath with oil, and if you want to take it a notch higher, you could add some soft flower petals.

Additionally, you can switch on your favorite music and light candles to create a soothing and romantic atmosphere. If you have challenges along the way that make your day look impossible, switch on your favorite soft music to give you that much-needed strength to go on. This way, you will focus your mind on the fact that the big day has finally arrived and you can celebrate every part of it without worrying about what lies outside the doors of your parents’ house or your single home.

Eat Well

Do you want to remain focused and relaxed on your wedding day? Then you need to pay attention to what you eat on that beautiful and memorable morning. You need to pamper yourself with your favorite breakfast to take you through to the last hour. You should also avoid meals that can make you feel bloated should your nerves get to you. For example, some scrambled eggs, fruit, coffee and water throughout the day would be a great choice. Fried foods and a 16 oz rare steak - not so much.

Get a quick workout

If you want to get your mind ready for the greatest day of your life, you have to take time in the early hours of the morning to do some basic workouts. Since a good workout is a proven way to release pressure and stress, you'll be able to approach the big hour calm, relaxed, and without jitters.

Go offline

Anyone living in this digital era knows just how destructive the phone and the social media can be. On this auspicious day, it would behoove you to switch off your phone and internet connection to avoid incoming messages and phone calls that can steal your joy and peace of mind on that day. At the very least, hand your phone to your maid of honor or a trusted friend and put them in charge of communication and basic decision making.

I can't stress this one enough.

Maintain order

Tips to keep you relaxed on your wedding morning

If you want to avoid falling into unnecessary stress and jitters, you should remain organized up to the very last detail. It is necessary for you to place everything in its rightful place and condition so that when the morning comes, you do not stress yourself trying to find this or that item. If a disorderly situation arises, you can rest assured that you will get angry, distressed, and walk down the aisle in the wrong mood.

Surround yourself with loving and caring people

Last and most important, you should surround yourself with strong, loving, caring people on your wedding morning. Nothing will keep you strong like knowing you have people around you who have your best interests at heart. If your parents are available, you should take advantage of that limited window as they see their “child” or “baby girl” in their home for the last time as she becomes “Mrs.” Remember, the most important person in this equation is your future husband, who is excited to be your "rock", to calm you, and to give you as much as love as possible leading up to the last hour.

Remaining calm and sober on your wedding day morning is absolutely necessary for the success of your marriage ceremony. If you can take some care to implement these tips into your wedding morning preparation, you will have controlled almost everything that you can by yourself, leaving you strength and some piece of mind to deal with the unknown.

Makeup Secrets Of Serena Williams

It never hurts to look to popular celebrities for makeup and beauty inspiration, and in this brief post, we’re going to take a look at the soon-to-be most radiant mother in the sports world. Serena Williams is currently missing the U.S. Open expecting the birth of her first child. In fact, as of the time of this writing, she’s in labor! But last we saw her she looked as stylish and beautiful as ever.

Makeup Secrets of Serena Williams

Williams has been about as dominant a sporting personality as we’ve seen in the last 20 years or so. At the outset of the 2017 tennis season, she was picked to lead the pack at the Australian Open and indeed wound up winning. Little did we know at the time that she was already pregnant! That about says it all regarding the type of athletic force Williams has come to represent. But throughout her illustrious career on the courts, she’s also defined herself with bold styles and seemingly effortless beauty.

Her Makeup Secrets

The tennis star has never been shy about playing the role of beauty icon or model, even if her main focus has remained relentlessly on athletic achievement. And during the 2016 U.S. Open we got some interesting insights into her routine thanks to an interview with her makeup artist, one Natasha Gross of Miami. The interview was conducted by New Beauty, and here we’ll mention a few of the key takeaways.

Gross opened up by discussing her love of NARS products for Williams’s editorial shoots (of which she does quite a few, naturally). The French-based cosmetics company has a full line of products, though Gross singled out the foundations and concealers as her favorites, and credited them with bringing out the luminosity to Williams’s skin – one of the features that are often highlighted with regard to her appearance.

The interview also covered the notion that Williams’s lifestyle could conceivably have negative effects on her skin. Indeed, rigorous athletic activity, sweat, and a lot of sun exposure can all be difficult to overcome in this regard! But here, Gross mostly referred to Williams’s dietary habits as reasons why her skin has never appeared to be anything less than flawless. To hear a career makeup artist simply say that eating healthy and staying hydrated makes the biggest difference is a nice reminder to all of us – even if we aren’t out chasing tennis titles for our professional lives!

Makeup Secrets of Serena Williams

And as a final point of interest, Gross actually seems to support a minimalist approach in general. Asked about Williams’s frequent smoky eye appearance on the courts, Gross simply said that the athlete does her own makeup for matches, focusing primarily on eyeliner and high SPF. Similarly, for red carpet appearances, it’s minimal eye shadow, lashes, and contouring. Given how striking Williams tends to look in general, this is a nice endorsement for the idea of achieving a great effect with relatively little product. Of course, Williams’s natural beauty comes into play a great deal as well. But mostly, her looks seem to come down to healthy skin and a few strategic touches!

3 Top Trending Wedding Makeup Looks

When thinking about what style of makeup you are going for, the way in which you communicate to your artist is essential. Here are the top 3 trending wedding makeup looks and my recommendation on how to acheive them.

There is so much that goes into planning your wedding. The venue, Photographer, Flowers, THE Dress, etc. When it comes time to think about what you want your wedding makeup looks to be for the big day, there is SO much to think about. Not to mention the countless photos on Pinterest, Instagram and Google. Where to begin?

When thinking about what style of makeup you are going for, the way in which you communicate to your artist is essential.
— Jessica Mae

My recommendation is to stay true to who you are. Really think about what your personal style is, and make your goal to accentuate that. Too often I hear about brides who go against what they truly want, and where their comfort zone truly lies. Now, if you are someone who wants to do something different and out of your comfort zone, by all means, go for it girl!

When thinking about what style of makeup you are going for, the way that you communicate to your makeup artist is essential. Having photos of inspiration is a great starting point, but also knowing what you want and using the right terms to describe it will lend to the success of the look.

I am here to help! I have broken down 3 Top Trending Wedding Makeup Looks to aid in not only narrowing down the look you want, but also being able to then communicate that to your artist.

On to the wedding makeup looks!

Natural

For ladies that want to slightly enhance their natural beauty, keeping your makeup look simple is the way to go. This is what most brides ask their artists for, but knowing what natural makeup means to an artist versus you is very important. Coming prepared with photos is key. When this makeup look is requested it is also helpful to have a photo of yourself with your daily makeup done. This way it gives your artist a gauge of what you're used to - if anything at all.

Knowing what natural makeup means to an artist versus you is very important.

When a natural makeup look is requested I recommend airbrush foundation as it tends to look more like your actual skin and is lightweight while still giving nice coverage. When requesting this look from your artist it is helpful to use descriptive words like; fresh, glowy (if you like a glowy look), not over done, myself but slightly enhanced.

Pro tip: When thinking about lashes for a natural look, ask your artist about individual lashes or a half strip lash.

naturalbridalmakeup.jpg

Natural

You, but a little more than your every day.

Romantic

I love this look for brides who want to have a hint of glam, but not too much. This type of makeup look is great for clients who want more than their every day look, but still would like to look like themselves. For me, what makes a look romantic is adding lashes and a little hint of smokiness to the shadow. This makeup look works for any type of venue or time of year. When requesting this look from your artist it is helpful to use descriptive words like; medium spicy, natural glam, romantic.

Pro Tip: For an extra pop, have your artist use shadows with some shimmer to them!

Glam

Full on bold and spicy! Glam looks are great for clients who love to wear makeup and want to make a statement with their look. If you're considering this look you can count on a bold lip, a smokey eye, some contouring (or sculpting which I prefer to call it) and of course lashes! I typically see brides request this type of look if they have a Fall, Winter or evening wedding, but the Glam bride can rock this look any time she wants. When requesting this look from your artist it is helpful to use descriptive words like; sassy, sexy, bold.

Pro Tip: Take your look to the next level by adding wings to your eye liner!

Glam

For those not afraid to make a statement.

Whatever style of makeup you decide on, make sure it makes you feel like your most beautiful self. Too often I have brides in my chair who are easily influenced by others (ahem... Mother of the Bride and sisters...) of what they think the bride should have for makeup. Remember, you're the one getting married - not them.

One last piece of advice...

Keep in mind when you are looking for inspiration images... any image you find online is likely edited. Some more so than others, but they are all edited. It is also a good idea to find photos where the person in it has similar features to you. Having realistic expectations not only sets you up for success but your artist as well.

Essential Makeup Tips For Tweens

When I started wearing makeup, my mom took me to the makeup counter at Macy’s where a trained professional helped me build my first makeup bag with items that were fun and exciting for me to try, but that didn’t make me look like I was 25.

When I started wearing makeup, my mom took me to the makeup counter at Macy’s where a trained professional helped me build my first makeup bag with items that were fun and exciting for me to try, but that didn’t make me look like I was 25.

Mascara is a staple item to keep in your makeup bag at all times.
— Jessica Mae

Fast forward to our world today…Instagram, YouTube and Pinterest have elevated society’s view of beauty and are infiltrating the mind of our youth. My goal is to give you some essential makeup tips for tweens to help them build their first makeup bag with great products that are fun and easy to use, and won’t make them look overdone.

A Cute Makeup Bag

This is the first essential item every gal needs. It's important to have a clean, dry place to store your makeup. This will help keep your makeup "clean" and also last longer if you store it somewhere dry. Humidity and heat are makeup's enemy as those environment are a breading ground for bacteria and also will speed up the expiration. There are many places you can find a cute makeup bag for your Tween, but Target is one of my favorites. They have a great selection and the prices are affordable as well.

makeup-bags-15.jpg

A must have!

This is one of my personal favorites.

Mascara

Mascara is a staple item to keep in your makeup bag at all times. It's a quick, easy way to enhance your beauty. For Tweens, I like the Covergirl LashBlast Volume. It's an easy formula to work with and the silicone applicator makes it easy to apply for beginners. Bonus - The price point is palatable for parents.

  • Pro Tip:  to avoid clumps apply thin layers of the mascara at a time and build as you go.

Quality Brushes Are Key

The right tools for the job are an essential part of the success of your makeup application. One of my favorite brands is Sigma Beauty. They are SUPER high quality and the price point for what you get is not bad at all.

Pro Tip: Brush maintenance is super important. Plan on washing your brushes once per week. For a deep clean use Sigma’s brush shampoo and cleaning gadgets.

Bronzer!

Bronzer is another staple product I recommend having in your makeup bag at all times. A good quality bronzer should give you a sun-kissed glow - not make you look like an extra in Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory.

My favorite bronzer for Tweens and ladies of all ages is from Benefit Cosmetics. Hoola is the perfect shade for almost any gal and does not contain any shimmer, which in my opinion is key!

Pro Tip: use a fan-tail brush to apply to ensure you don’t get too much product in one place.

The No Makeup, Makeup look

Beach in a Box!

Sweep on with a fan tail brush to get glowing in seconds.

Gloss it up

Finally, in our essential makeup tips for tweens, my favorite cosmetic item to round out a beginner's kit is a fun lipgloss. One of my favorites is Posie Balm from Benefit Cosmetics (I like Benefit if you can't already tell). It adds just a subtle pop of color and is both youthful and fun. This gloss also hydrates and conditions the lips leaving them soft. Benefit has a few other shades in this formula as well. Try them all!

The perfect lip balm for tweens

The perfect pink gloss

Add a pop of color and a little shine.

Removal

Makeup removal is a key element! Did you know that for every night you do not take your makeup off you age your skin by 7 days?! Crazy!

I'm not a huge fan of use remover wipes night after night, I found that it's hard on my lashes and skin over time. My absolute favorite makeup remover is from One Love Organics. It's a little more spendy, but totally worth it and lasts a long time. Pump one pump into your hands, rub together then massage over you entire face and eyes. Your makeup will slide right off and it leaves your skin soft, without any oily residue left behind. This is a great product for Tweens and Adults!

  • Pro Tip: Coconut oil is also a great makeup remover!

Remember, less is more! At the end of the day, I want makeup beginners to know that makeup should not define you. Makeup should be something that is fun and makes you feel great. It should not be something you need in order to feel relevant or beautiful. After all, what is on the inside is what counts. Cliché I know, but it's true. In a world filled with misinformation on what the definition of beauty is, I felt it was important to share some real tips on how to get started with makeup. I hope you enjoyed!

The Importance of a Beauty Contract for your Wedding Day

You're getting married, planning and decisions galore! Not to mention the countless options that are out there for every vendor you could ever want or need. Selecting the perfect professional takes research, due diligence and time. When you find that person or company that you click with, and you feel confident in them, is important to solidify the relationship with a legal agreement or contract. It is equally important as a professional to secure a client relationship through a contract.

Do I need a contract for my makeup or hair artist?

You might not have thought of this, but all too often brides-to-be have their wedding day turned upside down into a ball of stress due to makeup artists or hair stylists not showing up or cancelling the night before - never to be heard from again. So you may have already guessed the answer, but I'll do my best to paint this picture for you below.

Wedding contracts for hair and makeup

I've been in the business of weddings for years now, and unfortunately, my company has become an expert in crisis management. I know what you're probably thinking... "Crisis management? For makeup and hair?" Oh yes. More often than I like to admit (for the sake of the reputation of my industry) we have clients that come to us that have had their beauty team bail on them last minute OR worst yet...not show up at all! When I ask if they had a contract with them most of the time they say no. I am here to tell you, a contract is a non-negotiable item when it comes to a vendor-client relationship and you should never operate without one.

I could go on for days on this topic and bore you to tears with all the reasons why you need to have a contract in place with every professional you hire. I promise, though, I won't do that here. I've highlighted below three of the most important reasons for having a contract in place.

It keeps everyone honest.

Transparency is key. A good contract should list out all of the company's/vendor's policies on payment, deposit, cancellation, prices, additional fees etc. There should be absolutely no room for error when it comes to additional fees that you, the client, would incur if "X" happens. If down the road something gets called into question, you and your hired professional will have the contract agreement to fall back on. With the craze of planning your wedding, it's easy to forget some of the details you agreed to early on in the planning process. Your contract is a record of those items and keeps you and your professional honest and on the same page. Likewise, as a professional your contract is a tool to hold your clients accountable to what you've agreed to.

If something goes wrong you have a leg to stand on.

Heaven forbid your hired professional doesn't show up on the day of your wedding! What happens? If you have a contract in place, is this covered? Do you get a refund...what action can you take? If you don't have a contract in place and legal action is necessary it will be very difficult and a major stress on you to pursue. This goes for both the client and the professional. If your client's payment fails to process; what action are you able to take to ensure you get paid? Are you obligated to complete the service(s) without payment?

A professional standard.

A true professional will require a contract in order to secure their services and your wedding date. If the person/company you're looking to work with doesn't require a contract...run do not walk. You might get lucky and all will go well, but you might not. Do you really want to risk it on one of the most important days of your life? Industry pros, if a prospective client doesn't want to sign your contract and pushes to hire you without one...run do not walk. Signing a contract in order to secure you should not be up for negotiation.

Here's a snippet from an actual bride's comment on Wedding Wire's client forum

This past weekend I went with my mother to get my hair done for the first time with her hair stylist. We were thinking of hiring her to do our hair for my wedding but I wanted to see her work first. After meeting her (and she did a wonderful job with my highlights) I feel confident in hiring her. The only problem is that she does not use contracts nor does she require a deposit and I don’t think I feel comfortable taking her on her word that she’ll be there when the time comes. The same goes for the makeup artist who works at the same salon. My mom just trusts her because she’s been to her a bunch of times but I don’t feel comfortable not having it in writing. Especially being that my wedding is on a holiday weekend. Does anyone have an example of a contract they’ve signed with hair/makeup artist for their wedding? Maybe I can present it to her myself and simply explain that it’s not that I don’t trust her, but it’s common practice to protect both of us?
— Wedding Wire Bride

The final word on wedding day contracts

The last piece of advice I'll give here is, make sure the contract, is an actual contract. Email and text message conversations do not count. Pros, invest the money and time into hiring an attorney to draft your contract(s) for you. Clients, trust your gut. If something doesn't feel right ask the pro to explain or consult your own attorney. A good contract should protect BOTH the professional and the client.

Does this seem like a lot of hassle? Well... it is your wedding day. Ensuring that things are done right and that your day is filled with a stress-free, luxurious experience is a top priority for every bride-to-be. It's just about doing your diligence (or maybe you plan to hire a wedding planner to do it for you). Here are some top points to consider when hiring a glam squad to perfect your wedding day beauty looks.

  • Ensure that communication is clear, open and professional.
  • Ensure that a trial run/consultation is as important to the artists as it is to you.
  • Ensure they have some processes in place, like contracts and billing schedules.
  • Ask about reviews, techniques, specialties and client work.
  • Have a budget already in mind. Good Artist have horrendous costs - they charge accordingly and they are specialists in their craft.
  • Find an artist or agency whose work you love.
  • Expect a contract.

I hope this has helped shed some light on how important contracts are. Please keep all of these things in mind when planning your dream wedding! 5 easy steps for your 2017 Makeup Bag overhaul!

2017 is off and running - so it’s time to take a look at your makeup bag. Let’s toss the old, keep the new and upgrade our look this year; shall we? Here are 5 simple steps...

What's in Your Makeup Bag?

2017 is off and running - so it’s time to take a look at your makeup bag. Let’s toss the old, keep the new and upgrade our look this year; shall we? Here are 5 simple steps to help you declutter your makeup bag and discover a new and more fabulous you!

Step One: Take inventory of your makeup. When’s the last time you replaced your mascara? Have you been using the same blush for 3 years? Probably time to toss it and get a new one. Even for “solid” products bacteria builds up over time, so make sure you are adhering to the shelf life guidelines of the product.

Pro Tip: You can extend the life of solid products by sanitizing them from time to time. Make sure you use a 70% alcohol as opposed to 99%.

Step Two: Implement a brush washing routine. You really should wash your makeup brushes once a week. (Note: if you use a beauty blender or makeup sponge, those should be washed after each use!) DO NOT use rubbing alcohol or other soaps on your brushes. The bristles will become dry and brittle ruining your brush.

Make sure to use a gentle shampoo designed for makeup brushes. I really like the makeup brush shampoo from Sigma Beauty, as well as their brush cleaning mats & gloves.

Step Three: Schedule a makeup lesson with a pro artist. Many artists, like those who work for my company, will come to your home for a personalized lesson. In addition to teaching you all that you want to know about applying makeup to yourself, they will take a look at your makeup bag and give you advice on additional products you should purchase. They will ask questions about your lifestyle and daily routine, to make sure they teach techniques that will be appropriate to the amount of time that you want to spend putting your paint on each day.

Skin Care is a must!

Step Four: We can’t have great makeup without great skin care. Go see an esthetician for a facial and chat with her or him about the current products you’re using. A solid skin care routine will make or break your makeup application. Trust me! Ps: We love Jill at Skin Savvy, tell her WarPaint sent you!

Step Five: Hit your local Sephora or cosmetics department. Try something new, I dare you! I’ve talked with many women who say they’ve always wanted to rock a red lip, or wear false lashes. DO IT! We only get one go around at this life - step out of the box a bit; you may find you like it.

Following these easy steps will help you declutter your makeup bag. They will save you time and keep you looking and FEELING your very best! For an ultimate makeover, book a WarPaint International artisan for a makeup lesson - you won't regret it!

Top Tips to Help You Get Your Beauty Sleep

Beauty sleep is perhaps the single most important activity in your life. When you're well rested, you're mind, and hence your body, can function at very high levels. But getting there is severe challenge for society.

How Can I Fall Asleep Faster?

Many people suffer from an inability to fall asleep right away when they decide to shut down for the night. There are numerous factors that effect our sleep, including where we live, our diet, our habits, technology, our jobs and more.

Beauty sleep is perhaps the single most important activity in your life. When you're well rested your mind, and hence your body, can function at very high levels. But getting there is a severe challenge for society. A good night's rest can burn productive calories, clear up baggy eyes, heal muscle pains, lower stress and make us feel like a morning superman. But how can you achieve it?

Top tips to get your beauty sleep

Make Your Room A Sanctuary

Lighting. This is the first step. Comforting and restful lighting can be achieved through low-wattage lamps that you can place bedside. Lampshades should have soft, natural tones so they feel warm and relaxing. Windows also exude light at night unless you live in a sheltered area. Some people prefer blackout shades to sleep well, while other people may enjoy the gentle moonlight entering through a crack. This is entirely a personal preference.

Beauty Sleep. The single most important activity of the day.

Beauty Sleep. The single most important activity of the day.

The truth is, only about half the world gets good rest and it's because they live in a lifestyle that doesn't offer all the distractions that countries like the United States do. We are a sleep-deprived society, which increases our risk to heart attack, stroke, disease and bad attitudes. Making your room a sanctuary is extremely important in today's age. For more advice on how to manage this, read How To Make Your Room A Sanctuary by The Front Roe.

Bed Time. Stick to a regular schedule

"There is nothing worse than finally crawling into bed, feeling so tired that you swear you could sleep for a decade, only to find yourself physically unable to fall asleep. All day long, you looked forward to the moment you could head home and go to sleep, and now that you’re finally in bed with the lights off, you somehow can’t?"

By designing and keeping a bedtime and wake-up schedule, your body (and mind) will be better prepared to fall asleep, stay asleep and be refreshed the next day. Its very important to avoid varying your bedtime hours. Some of the top reason you can't sleep are:

  • You don't stick to a regular routine.
  • You exercise too late, or not at all.
  • You drank a glass of wine or other alcohol to "relax".
  • You nap too often.
  • You go to bed angry.
  • You use your bed for other things than sleep...
  • The temperature is too hot or cold.
  • You showered right before bedtime.
  • You worked until right before bedtime (BIG NO NO).
  • Your bed sucks and you need a new one.

If you want to know more, read "10 Reasons Why You Can't Fall Asleep by Byrdie"

Learn and Use Breathing Techniques

Do you practice Yoga or some other physical discipline? Breathing is an important part of our body's health. Your sleep habits are no different. While it may take some getting used to, there's a three-step breathing technique that has been shown to be effective. It will take some practice and patience but you'll appreciate the results. This is also a great stress reliever when needed.

The 4-7-8 Breathing Exercise by the Zoe Report

  1. Breathe in for four seconds.
  2. Hold breath for seven seconds.
  3. Slowly breathe out for eight seconds.

NO Technology

"You've heard it a million times, but for those of us who mindlessly surf Instagram or facebook while our heads are on the pillow, here's a million AND one: No screen time an hour before bed. Yes, that does mean your phone. Screens inhibit the production of melatonin, which naturally induces sleep. Your friends' reruns and the political banter on social media can wait until the next day if it doesn't interfere with the important stuff". - Byrdie

And for God's sake, remove the television from your bedroom that gets shut off at 3am when its snaps you out of a deprived sleep cycle.

Technology can destroy our sleep patterns. Keep your phone and digital devices away from your bed or in another room.

Technology can destroy our sleep patterns. Keep your phone and digital devices away from your bed or in another room.

Make A Hot Drink

I'll know you'll be disappointed but we're not talking about hot toddies here. Many people struggle to fall asleep on a nightly basis. You'll be happy to know that some foods and drink can actually aid in this problem. Our bodies naturally respond to hot drinks late at night. Many people agree it's the warmth of the cup in your hands and liquid in your body that lull you to sleep, but there is some science behind it too.

Chamomile tea has anti-anxiety effects and some research has shown that it will raise your glycine levels. Glycine is a natural sedative.

If you're hungry, have some whole wheat bread or cereal. Whole wheat is known to begin the process of making melatonin, which helps you fall asleep. You want to avoid cereals with sugar of course. Turkey is also a great bedtime snack due it's very high levels of tryptophan. Insomniacs also often suffer due to low levels of magnesium. Eating fish before bed can provide those missing vitamins and help you conk out.

Tips to help you get your beauty sleep

Is my sleep affected by where I live?

YES. As much as you may love the big city lights, you should move for many reasons. Mass populations are a by-product of poorly designed societies when it comes to health and happiness. They fuel poor human habits.

top tips to help you get beauty sleep

According to Dr. Lisa Wolfe of Northwestern Medicine and the Academy of Sleep Medicine, big cities like Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and others are the primary cause of something that much of our society suffers from - environmental sleep disorderPlanes, trains, subways, sirens, people on the street, gunshots, motorcycles, and even low-level constant noise that you think you've tuned out over time are serious factors when it  comes to brain function, depression and advanced aging.

Big city living is also associated with much longer commute times to work which lead to longer days, anxiety and frustration. In cities like Chicago and New York, 200 - 300 hours per year can be spent on your commute. These cities, due to their responsive design, make it nearly impossible to come home during the day as well. So a regular sleep schedule, excercise and healthy eating are also common challenges. These problems can cause daytime sleepiness, mood swings and irritability. Over time it may result in severe sleep deprivation. Whether city dwellers want to admit it or not, this increases the risk of problems such as depression, poor job performance and overall aggressive personality traits. Some research also shows it's the driving factor behind divorce and relationship issues. We've all heard the saying that city people are single people...

Urban areas also have some of the poorest air and water quality in the nation. Most city dwellers run very high risks to develop asthma, allergies, dry eye and even cancer. Their young children are almost certain to grow up developing these health problems. Creating an environment to successfully dominate life is hard enough, let alone mixing a cocktail of sleep depriving elements into your life. If you must live in a city, take careful measures to eat properly, stick to a regular sleep schedule, avoid tobacco and alcohol and exercise regularly, to offset the stress of living in populated areas.

The Nation's Fattest Cities

Junk food and poor health choices affect your sleep as much as every other topic we've covered here. Some foods are great for inducing sleep and promoting health, but some are just bad. No matter where you live in the United States, you have endless options to eat poorly - and eat poorly we do.

The 3 fattest American cities

"Could where you live determine if you’re overweight, eating right or even getting enough rest? Check out the 3 fattest cities in the United States and how well their residents sleep, according to WalletHub.

  1. Memphis, TN – The homeland of Elvis, fried peanut butter sandwiches and BBQ, takes the throne for the fattest city. More than 30% of Memphis adults are considered obese and they have the highest number of “food deserts” (stores that don’t offer healthy or fresh food options).
*** Memphis also ranks #2 for the sleepiest city.
  2. Shreveport, LA – The 3 rd largest city in Louisiana has loads more problems than being number 2 on this list. Shreveport also ranks in the 99th percentile of obesity, number 5 for diabetes and number 4 for high blood pressure.
***Shreveport also ranks #20 for the sleepiest city.
  3. Houston, TX – As the famous saying goes, everything’s bigger in Texas. With more than 100 days a year with temperatures over 100 F, residents seem to be opting to stay inside with the AC and binge on snacks and Netflix. Not surprisingly, Houston has 1,034 fast food restaurants, the highest in the nation.
*** Houston also ranks #25 for the sleepiest city.

The 5 fittest American cities – and maybe the most well-rested too!

"On the other side of the spectrum, you’ll find the fittest American cities. All 5 of these cities offer healthy food options, a variety of public transportation options and have easy access to parks and outdoor activities."

  1. Washington D.C. – also ranks #5 for best-rested city
  2. Minneapolis, MN – also ranks #6 for best-rested city
  3. Denver, CO – also ranks # 10 for best-rested city
  4. Portland, OR – also ranks #7 for best-rested city
  5. San Francisco, CA – also ranks #3 for best-rested city

The moral of the story is that sleep is directly related to mental health, physical health, professional success and physical appearance. You can take steps in every facet of your life to control the quality of sleep that you are getting each night and during what hours you get it. From there, many other areas of your life will become easier to control. Oh... and you'll look AMAZING.

Sleep well my beauties.

Ahhh... A great night's rest.

Overall skin protection. I've been loving Elta MD's UV Aero Broad-Spectrum SPF 45 this year so far. Application is super easy as it is a spray sunscreen. The best part is it leaves NO greasy residue behind. It's also mineral based which is better for your body. Find it at eltamd.com.

Hydrate From The Inside - Out

Drink lots of water! Okay, now I sound like your mom, but in all seriousness water is your best friend. Keeping yourself hydrated will keep your skin looking radiant and fresh, as well as keep you feeling your best (especially after a few cocktails). I like to drink my water with some fresh lemon or strawberry with mint. It's yummy!

The beauty industry is nearing the $500 billion mark and proving to be a creative outlet for professionals, hobbyists, women and men. With the number of cosmetic companies and beauty brands that have niched their way into the drawers and cases of beauty fanatics, its no wonder that actors, musicians and creatives of all types rely heavily on their go-to products.

But what exactly does "Beauty" mean? The latest Makeup trends on Instagram may have you thinking that tiger stripes and heavy contouring are how normal women are supposed to look. Jessica Mae's chat with Cristina Scabbia reveals a little bit of insight to her go-to products and perspective on beauty, but also.. what beauty really means to Cristina Scabbia.

Interview - The Deep Stuff

Jessica Mae:
You’ve spoken quite a bit over the years about not depriving yourself from the sexy element of being a beautiful woman inside an industry and genre that is largely dominated by men. Can you describe your thoughts on how beauty is perceived in the metal / rock industry and how your personal style works to combat people’s perceptions of what beauty really is?

Cristina:
Back when I started, there were not so many metal bands with a female in the line up. So I guess I developed during that year, a sort of “I don’t care what you think” attitude, as I don’t really see myself as the different element in the band. I look at myself as a singer and performer.

That said, I like my femininity as an individual and I am proud to be a woman. So even if I am also “one of the guys” I still love to play with my hair and make up and wear a tight dress with killer heels.

Now things are even more mixed up and some guys are wearing more makeup and hairspray than women usually do so the game has changed :) Whenever a look works very well and can be loved by many, there is also that other part of the crowd that will keep and extra eye on you and judge whatever you wear or how you look “just ‘cause”. It's part of the game and I love that , it keeps it exciting :)

This is also why I’ve never tried to fight against whoever had pre-conceptions about females in a rock metal world…because it would be useless. And in the end, everyone chooses their own idea of what beauty is, and it is impossible to make everybody happy.

Jessica Mae:
How does femininity play into your role in Lacuna coil? What elements do you work hard at to ensure that you remain “Cristina" at your core?

Cristina:
Honestly I would not know, as I don’t think about it at all! I think there is a special sparkle from inside that tells you what to do in every situation, may it be in a live show, in a photoshoot or in a regular day out. The most important thing for me (and the most natural) is to be myself, whatever happens and whatever the situation is. That includes taking public photos with no makeup on… or being super dressed with makeup on. This is even if I am alone at home, ahaha!

Jessica Mae:
Can you talk a little bit about some of the criticisms you’ve faced from a beauty perspective inside the metal music scene?

Cristina:
Well, women in the business are in a position of being more easily accused of abusing their “sexuality” in photoshoots and live shoots: some people might think they try to sell themselves out. All the while, no one says anything if a guy sweats with no shirt on… :-)

I don’t tend to show too much, but only because i like to feel comfy and I'm more of a tomboy. But I think that all the other women should be free to do whatever they want on stage and wear whatever they want (or go naked if they like) as long as THEY are the ones who chose the way they dress.

Jessica Mae:
You are a big advocate of inner beauty. In a world that is mostly material and driven by sex-appeal marketing, can you talk about what’s below the surface for Cristina Scabbia? - What does inner beauty mean to you?

Cristina:
In one word I would probably say... CONFIDENCE

I know that's a word that’s maybe been a little trite or abused. but it’s so perfect in the end. When you believe in who you are and who you represent and look at yourself in the mirror and you’re proud of yourself, you can only irradiate  magnetic energy around you.

Jessica Mae:
What defines the beauty of a woman?

Cristina:
Some women have that special “glow” that everyone else is amazed by. It might be the light in the eyes, some gestures, a special way of walking… Beauty in general is such a complex thing to define. A person can have nearly perfect facial features and the perfect body (in terms of a generic aesthetic idea) but then they might not be attractive anyway. Weird, uh?

Jessica Mae:
If you were to sit with a group of young women that struggled with self-confidence and inner beauty, what tips or piece of advice would you give them? What should they walk away with? What would they learn from Cristina Scabbia?

Cristina:
I would say this. You think you are not beautiful because you are hypnotized by media bombarding you with the ideals of the “perfect woman”. But if you pay more attention to how many women are completely far from that ideal, do you still consider yourself very beautiful and attractive?

Looks are very standardized these days but true beauty really comes from within. We are ALL different and unique, there is none in the world just like us. We are not even a limited edition so-to-speak - we are all one-of-a-kind… yet we don’t always appreciate that.

Jessica Mae:
Speaking of self-confidence, inner beauty is often driven by one’s ability to see their own glow and special light in the world. What words of wisdom do you have about self-confidence, when we’re often surrounded by people trying to take that away from us.

Cristina:
I would be a hypocrite if I would simply say to someone else: “believe in yourself, you can do it!”.

Obviously I strongly believe that the more I believe in myself, the more I am driven and the more I feel comfortable with my reflection in the mirror. But I also have some days when I feel that I look like shit no matter what makeup I have on, whatever dress I am wearing. Its then that I realize that 99% of the time its not even about my look, it is not about how people really see me… but is about ME, judging myself on a deeper level because I am usually bothered about something else.

Did you notice that when you feel very happy you pretty much feel you look fantastic even with no makeup and a cheap shirt on?

Jessica Mae:
Can you describe your journey briefly, growing up as a Creative, an Entrepreneur and a female business owner. Is there anything you wish you could have done differently? How have your biggest challenges related to being female?

Cristina:
Woah... long story short (we are talking about almost 20 years in Lacuna coil), I started to sing in Lacuna coil in 1996, when there were definitely not so many bands with a female in the line up. Weird thing is, I have never felt like the different element and never felt I had to work more because I was a female. I looked at myself as another member in the band.

Of course I had to go through stages like “hey, I might be slightly pretty but I can actually sing as well!” to convince a still very conservative slice of metal fans that there was space for women in metal. I am very happy that things changed though, and there are now more women in bands of all genres. I am also proud of the fact that I am still here and others are looking at me as an example to follow. I am honored.

As per my career, I took care of my singing (writing lyrics and creating vocal lines) and also my looks from day one. I adopted some in the past that were not exactly great, especially in the first years (I still remember a blue short velvet dress with very puffy eyes, tons of make up and fake long nails) but I also came out of it with great ones that fans are still remembering. In the beginning, I experimented a lot and it was my attempt on searching for the perfect look and I quickly realized, changing and playing with my image, that the best solution was to wear a style of clothes that was… me.

Jessica Mae:
You were quoted once saying, "No matter what, be strong, because the message that people will get is from your strength. There is not just one kind of beauty in this world." Can you describe the time or moment when you turned the page and understood what that strength and inner beauty looked like for you?

Cristina:
It is weird because some people think I am, but I never really looked at me as a beautiful woman. I still consider myself as a very normal (at least aesthetically) woman that learned to improve some things on her look.

I think strength is when you don’t feel the most perfect person in the world but it is when you can accept your flaws as well, and make them your best quality.

The Fun Stuff: On The Surface

Jessica Mae:
We know that understanding what is inside, is the driving force behind one’s beauty, but we still like to “look” beautiful and feel sexy too. What are the top 3 things that you do to create your radiant look or sex appeal?

Cristina:
My “raccoon eyes” signature look. My eyes are kind of small so I started to enhance them years ago with lots of black matte eyeshadow that was reminiscent of “smokey eye” look, but was also covering all the lower part of the eye. So I feel good when I have this look on!

Whenever I want to feel really sexy I put on a mini-dress and very high heels. I don’t wear them often (my friends are always telling me I have to show them more, ahaha!) as I feel uncomfortable to show my legs. I prefer leggings and biker boots but I have lots of high heel shoes at home (I love to own them but don’t wear them often… weirdo). So I put them to use every once in a while.

I also have a weird passion for fake fur jackets especially when they are super puffy - funny (with ears for example) and with strange colors. I know it sounds silly but I feel so comfortable that some people say my face kind of changes too and is more relaxed. Eeeeeh!! I am strange, I know.

Jessica Mae:
What is your favorite shade of lipstick right now?

Cristina:
Redrum by Jeffree Star cosmetics. Awesome shade of red.

Jessica Mae:
If you had to choose one beauty product that is your favorite, what would it be??

Cristina:
The Beauty blender, it changed my whole makeup universe!!!!
(Check out this link for some great tips on
how to clean the beauty blender)

Jessica Mae:
Your eyeliner is always so rich in color. What brand do you like to use?

Cristina:
The Kat Von D one (tattoo liner in shade Trooper), is pretty cool!

Jessica Mae:
What is your favorite brand of makeup and/or beauty products?

Cristina:
Anastasia Beverly Hills, Becca, Bare Minerals, Kat Von D, Urban Decay, Benefits, Jeffree star, Beauty Blender.

Jessica Mae:
And I think everybody probably wants to know... how long does it take you to get ready before a show?

Cristina:
Not much!! I don’t spend a lot of time putting makeup on, definitely waaaaay under half an hour. And in the case of need, a few minutes at best :-)

SS 2016 Fashion. Hair Un-Styling. Is it For You...

It has become quite clear that the new “cool girl” has zero shame about allowing her “wakeup hair” to be quickly coiffed with a touch a dry shampoo and a good brushing.

Diving into Spring / Summer Fashion Week 2016

It has become quite clear that the new “cool girl” has zero shame about allowing her “wakeup hair” to be quickly coiffed with a touch a dry shampoo and a good brushing.  While last year we saw beach waves and the return of texture in a daring way, we are now saying “ it is what it is.”

Here in the Midwest, the return of the winter's moisture-free air and subzero temperatures, promises a season of highly annoying split ends, endless static, and dull hair. I recently drowned myself in Harpers Bazaar (The Best Beauty Looks for NYFW Spring 2016) for days, and I can say that I am thankful for the newest trend that is coming about for SS2016.  While you will always appreciate the magical blowout that your stylist gives you, it will only last a few days at most for many.  The stress on your hair from the water, heat and dry air is extreme.  What can you do?

Enter Hair Un-styling

If I may... a thought about the marriage of makeup and hair.  I believe beauty can be simple and complex all in the same space. Power braids, center parts, deep side parts, bangs...

As a hairdresser, I strive to understand the intention of someone’s style through his or her lens.  I love the lady that wears the reddest lip she owns as she sits in my chair.  In years past I would have been so excited to give her that show-stopping old Hollywood glam marcel wave.  I look at her differently now.  Her red lip tells me secretly “don’t hide me”.

While curating our SS2016 trend collection, we are striving to create a portfolio of looks that help the modern day women to be better understood by truly building a relationship between her hair and makeup.  This collection, with countless hours of collaboration with the most talented artists in the country, will be thoughtful, beautiful, unique, and approachable.

How Many Days Until New York Fashion Week??

When it comes to your hair right now, less could definitely be more.  In a recent blog post I wrote of the vulnerability, that if we choose it, can transport us to a time where we didn’t have the skill to blow dry our hair with a round brush or create the soft waves with our curling wand we love so much.  At that time we did what we knew how to do, maybe a simple braid, or lots of ponytails. If you look at the last walk of Valentino you will see just that.

Valentino | Spring Summer 2016 by Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli | Full Fashion Show in High Definition. (Widescreen - Exclusive Video - PFW/Paris Fashion Week)

An octagon pattern of twists was the hi-lite of those heads of hair as they pounded down the runway.  The “power braids” that are coming back into trend are exposing and fierce.  The “Warrior Woman” of today has a bigger goal for the day than an hour of styling.  She is strong and has zero time for anything that keeps her from the battles she faces each day.

Interestingly enough, she passes by a different woman also in high trend right now.  This power girl has an earthy and mossy look to her hair.  Mostly air-dried with a touch of hair oil she throws her Mason Pearson brush in her purse and away she goes.  Not curly, not strait, not wavy, just…her.  The raw natural essence of her spirit; her hair is what it wants to be, undone.  Un-heated, not pulled, not fastened, not pinned.  Parted and ..pardon me…that’s it.  Her lip, a velvet matte red like seen in Jason WU SS2015.

This is what I mean by complex and simple.  We can now wonder, where is she going?  I can’t help but think, how freeing it must feel to let go of what we know and just wash and condition with beautiful product, apply a small amount of precious hair oil and a red lip, maybe a touch of tinted moisturizer and head out the door to the catwalk streets of your city.  Aha, a trend has been born because we decided to be vulnerable and “un-dress” our hair.

If its already hit the runway, can I pull this off ?

How can we inspire you?

Our talented and highly professional artisans can be your compass to selecting the right shades and consulting on whether you will undress your hair, your makeup, or both.  For those who still live in the WarPaint world of (and I have to use a line from Local designer Julia Moss) “ Full wattage” hair and makeup - we are still here for you.  Natural and elegant , or painted and glam, we are your artists.  We are your beauty on demand.

Chances are, you have a beauty routine. You apply your make-up the same way each day; you tend to use the same products; you wash and brush your hair a certain way. Many of us are hesitant to try a new product or switch up the way we do something. We’ve gotten used to a certain way of beautifying ourselves, and it works for us.

However, there are so many awesome cosmetology tips out there, many of which you might not even know about. Andrew Graham of La' James International College of Cosmetology has put together a list of 15 of the best little-known beauty Cosmetology Tips and tricks for you below:

Our List of Cosmetology Tips...

1. Use scotch tape when applying eye liner or eye shadow
Grab a piece of scotch tape and lay it strategically to prevent the shadow or liner from going where it shouldn’t. This is especially helpful when you’re doing winged eye liner. Lay the tape at an angle so you can draw the line along the edge of the tape. This will also help keep both sides even.

2. Easy lip exfoliation
Use a baby or child toothbrush to exfoliate your lips. You can coat your lips in lip balm or petroleum jelly before you scrub them. For more serious exfoliation, you can also make a homemade lip exfoliation treatment by mixing sugar and coconut oil.

3. Wash your hair the right way
Make sure your hair is wet before applying shampoo. If you have long hair (hair below your shoulders), condition your ends before you shampoo; this will help protect them from drying out or being damaged more. You only need to lather your hair at the scalp, and in particular the nape of the neck. You only need to condition from the “middle” section of your hair to the ends, and the longer the conditioner stays in your hair, the better it absorbs. And lastly, rinse your hair with cold water; this shuts the cuticle and gives your hair the most shine.

4. Plastic spoons are your friends
Got a plastic spoon lying around? When you’re applying mascara to your bottom lashes, place the spoon directly under your bottom lashes (the underside of the spoon facing up) to avoid getting any mascara on the skin. You can also get a thicker coat this way.

5. Find the right shade
When you’re choosing a foundation, test the color on the skin near your jaw line. Try to do this in natural light. You don’t want the shade of your foundation to be too different than the natural color of your neck.

6. Make your eyes look bigger
Instead of using a dark pencil or liner in your water line, use a white pencil. This will create the illusion of a bigger eye.

7. Heat your eyelash curler
Hold a hairdryer to your eyelash curler for about 3-5 seconds. This works in the same way that a curling iron does. The curl will last longer!

8. Use a clarifying shampoo
Clarifying shampoos help remove buildup from styling products. However, you don’t need to use one everyday; they can be used once a week. They also help prevent dandruff and other scalp and hair conditions.

9.  Keep your eye liner in place
To ensure your eye liner stays where it’s supposed to, particularly under the bottom lashes, apply pressed or loose powder directly under the eye liner on your lower lid. This creates kind of a barrier which prevents your eye liner from moving downward.

10. Compliment that pedicure
Pedicures are great, but it’s also important to take care of your feet—not just your toes! Scrub your feet with a pumice stone in the shower every morning. After you dry off, apply moisturizing cream to your feet. This way, you don’t need a pedicure as often. It also keeps your feet healthy and the fungus away.

11. Enhance those lips
To make your lips look slightly fuller, line your lips just outside of the natural line. Don’t go TOO far outside of this line! You want it to look natural. Choose a shade of lip liner that is very close to your lipstick color.

12. Nail Color that Pops
Instead of using a clear base coat under your favorite nail polish, use a coat of white nail polish instead. It will make your nail color pop more, with a bolder, brighter color. It will also protect your natural nails from becoming stained by heavily colored polishes.

13. Perfect Winged Eyeliner
Achieving that winged look around your eyes that everyone loves is really easy, and all you need is your eyeliner pencil and a spoon. Start your eyeliner being drawn from the outer edge of your eye, and press the rounded side of the spoon against your eyelid, moving the pencil around it as a guide. Move the spoon outwards as you draw the shape of your liner, then fill it in with your pencil.

14. That Smoky Look Made Easy
If you’ve wanted to try that smoky eye makeup look but think you lack the skills, think again! With your darker eyeliner, draw a hashtag at the outer corner of each of your eyelids. Make it slanted to follow the line of your lid. Just blend it in as you apply your eyeshadow, and you’ll get a nice smoky look without the hassle.

15. Apply Concealer the Right Way
Instead of dotting your concealer under your eyes, instead apply it in a triangular shape, extending down the side of your nose, across the tops of your cheeks up to the outer corner of your eye, and across the bottom of each eye. This will not only hide redness beneath your eyes, but will also brighten your entire face, instead of making your under-eye area oddly lighter than the rest of your skin.

So there you have it, a handful of tips and hacks you can use to get the most from your makeup routine each day. Just keep in mind that it’s not about using the most expensive products, but more about how you use and apply them that makes a world of difference.

8 Tips on How to Prepare Your Skin for Winter

H to the 2-O!!! Hydration from the inside out is the very best way to prevent the problem in these desert dry months.

Winter is coming! Here are some tips to prepare your skin.

What products and / or treatments work well for people who suffer from eczema in the winter time?

Chronic eczema can be very tricky to treat completely, but to decrease symptoms and itch that can sometimes accompany it, an excellent natural remedy is Veriditas Botanicals essential oil blend called "Eczema Treatment". Applied 2-3 times daily with a thick salve, shea butter or olive oil on top can greatly improve this problem without the typical prescribed steroid creams that thin the skin and eventually stop working anyway.

What are some of the best ways to combat dry or chapped lips?

First of all...H to the 2-O!!! Hydration from the inside out is the very best way to prevent the problem in these desert dry months. Dry lips are one of the very first indicators that you are dehydrated. Listen to them!

Secondly, always keeping a barrier on those chops to keep the cold wind and elements that we're exposed to in the frigid weather away from that delicate skin. Look for names like lip butter, or protective balm. Even Aquaphor is wonderful. NO Chap-stick or Blistex! These have fiber glass derivatives that harm the lips rather then help.

How often should you be exfoliating your skin to get rid dead cells?

Generally, for normal skin types every other day is good. But when it comes to dry skin types, too much exfoliating strips that ever important layer of skin that can hold all important oils in, out of the skin that we very much need this time of year. To be sure you're exfoliating enough but not too much, use the Clarisonic brush once a day with the Delicate brush head and a gentle, creamy granular scrub with jojoba beads.

What are some of your favorite products for those who have excessive dry skin in the winter?

You may think thick, creamy lotions are the best, but they can only do so much to really get down deep into the skin, or retain enough water. An excellent pre moisturizer serum that pushes moisture deep down to lock in water in the dermis is Hydrating Complex from Skin Medica. Do this before moisturizer and then top with Skin Ceuticals Hydrating B5 mask before bed to douse skin with the ultimate moisture cocktail.

For us oily skinned guys & gals; what do you recommend to keep our skin hydrated while also controlling the oil?

Again, the Hydrating Complex! Light enough not to add oil, but moisturizing enough to prevent dehydration that can occur in the winter to even oily skin, which will then in turn cause your skin to produce more oil to compensate for the loss of moisture.

How often should you go in for a facial to maintain healthy glowing skin?

For a normal skin, about 8 weeks. Problematic, congested, or dry / dehydrated skin should be more consistently 4-6 weeks apart to keep skin more deeply cleansed and exfoliated which in turn prevents acne bacteria to produce, or dry, built up dead skin to block moisture retention.

What are some of the biggest mistakes people make in regards to their skin the winter?

One the hardest things on our skin during the winter is the exposure to the elements when it comes to wind and extreme cold. This stresses the blood vessels in the skin creating redness (and many times breaking the vessels) and stripping moisture. So not having enough moisture in the skin to protect, PLUS a scarf or high necked coat to block the harsh weather can cause a lot of aging and damage.

Any other tips & advice for keeping our skin healthy in the winter time?

Besides all the above, one word, Sunblock. We think because it isn't summer anymore and not outside as much, we can forget about this step. The sun can actually be as strong as an August summer day (when the sun is at its peak strength) with the reflection of the sun on the snow. We've all been blinded by the sun when driving in the winter. With how hard it is on our eyes to see, think how hard it is on our skin as well! And all the "aging" UVA rays go right through glass. At least a daily SPF of 30 or higher to hold up all day is best.

The Perfect Soft Waves.

On a daily basis, my guests ask me for very natural looking hair.  At first, my response was“ Is my blowout loosing its touch?” In response, the guest applauded the effort and skill taken to create the perfect red carpet style.

How to Achieve the Perfect Soft Waves.

From the Director's Chair.

Benjamin Rodich. National Artistic Director for Hair. WarPaint International Beauty Agency.

While heading to work on a daily basis, I am fortunate to see the streets of my hometown Minneapolis, MN filled with inspiration for the day I am about to begin.  In what used to be a sea of perfect blowouts and coiffed bobs, I am now taken to a fantasy like place where “ethereal” is the only way to describe what is around me. Perfection is imperfect, it limits.  A writer once said, “I believe in a world of opposites.”  What we called “Messy Hair” or “Beach Hair”, has now turned into gentle patterns of texture; so delicate and childlike.

On a daily basis, my guests ask me for very natural looking hair.  At first, my response was  “ Is my blowout loosing its touch?” In response, the guest applauded the effort and skill taken to create the perfect red carpet style. “Today Benjamin, I want to reflect the me that I will be today, and I look forward to the "Night on the Town" blow dry that I have come to know and love.” With that said, I racked my brain for a way to offer my ladies an effortless look, that had a step-by-step method that could give them this natural, and sexy look.  This journey took some time for me to polish; not perfect.  Perfection is an end.  A limit.

Today I offer you a detailed suggestion on how to create these soft waves in 2 different ways.

Soft Waves with Heat.

Step One. Wash and condition hair thoroughly. Towel dry.

Step Two. Apply a heat protectant that will offer you a matte and dry finish. I recommend using Ciment Thermique from Kérastase.  Apply this product in a quarter size amount from root to tip.

Step Three.  Apply Mousse Bouffante from Kérastase using the applicator tip and applying directly to hair, starting at one inch from root.  Make four lines of mousse going all the way to the end of your hair. Lightly rake the product into your hair until it all has disappeared. You will do this to both sides and the back of your head.

Step Four. Blow-dry using low velocity and high heat; downward with the grain of the hair.  Continue until hair is 60-70% dry.

Step Five.  Spray 2-3 pumps of Spray Á Porter from Kérastase in each section that you applied the mousse.  You will apply this primarily from roughly 2-3 inches from root to the ends of hair.  (Note, if you have very dense hair, sections can be split in half so product is applied evenly.) You will begin to feel some tug as this product gives the hair some grit, like it has been dusted with fine sand.

See note below before beginning Step Six.

Step Six. Once hair is dry, use a curling wand or 1 inch curling iron on high heat and take 2-inch sections and wrap hair around the iron, leaving the last ½ inch that is left non-heated.

NOTE:  With natural wavy hair, skip step six and apply a quarter size of Cotton Uzu from Shu Uemura to all hair. Twist and massage each section and lightly spray with Laque Dentelle from Kérastase.  Your result should be gauzy and airy waves.

For straight hair, after curling, follow the above instructions using Cotton Uzu from Shu Uemura  and Laque Dentelle from Kérastase.

Soft Waves with No Heat:

Step One. Wash and condition your hair thoroughly, using sulfate free shampoo and conditioner.

Step Two. Apply Mousse Bouffant from Kérastase, using the applicator tip and applying directly to your hair, starting at one inch from root. Make four lines of mousse going all the way to the end of your hair. Lightly rake into your hair until it all has disappeared.

Step Three. Spray 2-3 pumps of Spray Á Porter from Kérastase in each section that you applied the mousse. You will apply this primarily from roughly 2-3 inches from the root to the ends of your hair. (Note, if you have very dense hair, sections can be split in half so product is applied evenly). You will begin to feel some tug as this product gives the hair some grit like it has been dusted with fine sand.

Step Four. You may braid this in two braids and then sleep on it. If you do, in the morning, remove the braid and rake your fingers through the hair. If you desire more smoothness, apply a small amount of Touché Perfection from Kérastase to the mids and ends of your hair.

If you wish to do this in the morning, AFTER Spray Á Porter is applied, twist small sections of the hair all over the head and continue to twist until your hair is almost dry (this may take a few hours).
